How are we not bad?

I can't figure out how we're not worse than we are. Nobody values our veterans, not even the fans. Our young guys can't even get invited to the rising stars challenge or make ESPN's top 25 players under 25. Coach is clueless. Offense is stagnant. Defense is below average. Injuries to Williams and Hayward. Tinsley and Watson are our point guards. Tinsley and Watson!

How do we have a better record than the Lakers and Celtics? Is it the home court elevation? Is it the winning culture?

I honestly have no idea.

RE: Lakers and Celtics -- probably teams are more up and psyched when they play them, but Utah, meh, plus we have a tradition of being hard to beat at home, so that probably also is a psychological factor in our favor.

Its because of our depth IMO

I would say that it's because of our bigs. Sap and Jefferson are producing offensively at a very high level. Kanter and Favors then are producing defensively at a high level.
Most teams are weak at the 4 and 5 in their starting unit! We're bombarding every team with quality bigs for 48 minutes.

I, too, am often shocked by our 7th seed team!!! We should grab a beer, braugh!
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying we're good. I check the internet a couple times a day in the hopes that we'll make a trade.

It's just weird that we don't suck. The team this year, the whole situation, it's just weird.

The NBA is in a transition phase right now. Most of the dominate players from the past decade are almost done (KG, Truth, Kobe, Dirk, Nash, etc) while the upcoming generation is good but not quite there yet (Griffin, CP3, Gallinari, Lawson, Hayward, Dwill, Lopez, Lillard, Curry, Favors, etc). With the exception of a few players, like Lebron, Melo, and Kobe, there just aren't many dominate players right now... Especially in the middle. Go back just a few years and the league was filled with Duncan, Robinson, Webber, Shaq, KG, Dirk, etc. Here in a few years players like Lillard, Griffin, Paul George, Favors, Irving, Robinson, Harden, etc are going to be incredible.

I think you also need to consider the injuries to franchise players too. I can't remember a time when so many stars were injured. Dwill has been injured most of this year, Lopez has missed some time, the stars from the Lakers have missed time, CP3 has missed significant PT, Wall just barely started to play, Love never really played this year, Rubio just started to play, Bynum hasn't even played, Eric Gordon missed a ton, Dirk missed a huge chunk, Rose has yet to play, and Rondo is gone.

The Jazz are actually in a pretty good spot right now. There isn't any team in the west that scares me (other than the Spurs because pop is our daddy). No team is overloaded with HOF vets in their primes. Even OKC has some serious weaknesses (bad bench, no one other than their big 2 can score, their bigs are offensively inept, etc). Spurs? Awesome team but a lil past their expiration date. Duncan isn't what he used to be.

We are just a good HC and trade(get rid of Jefferson) away from really having a chance to catch fire and go deep ala 07. Seriously folks, lets assume we played the Clips or Grizz in a 7 game series. We'd compete. I'm not sure if we'd win. But we could compete. Denver, GS, or Houston? Again, we could compete. Even against OKC, we could compete.

If we somehow made it to the Finals we'd probably be rocked by King James and the refs... But at least we would have an advantage inside, which could make things interesting. Just like the Pacers did for a few games in the playoffs last year, feed the animals inside and beat the hell out of them in the paint. Too bad our focal point on offense refuses to play physically....

Big Al is a superstar. That is the biggest reason.
I know no one wants to hear it but he makes a lot of things appear better than they are. But overall it's not a good thing the way things are right now imo. Either the Jazz need to trade him away so the players behind him can develop and the team can go into a full rebuild, or trade away the younger undeveloped players and get some players that can help Big Al win now. This is no reason to hate on Big Al.

This is a good point. We are deep at PF and C right now and deeper than all other teams at those positions. We also addressed a major need last season by adding shooting to our roster.

The problem is that it is unlikely to matter in the playoffs. Depth is less of a factor with more rest in the playoffs. Our bombarding of every team for 48 minutes becomes less effective when our starters (weak link) will undoubtedly play more and so will the opponents 2 best bigs.

The Jazz are 20-6 at home, 10-18 on the road. That's a very drastic difference.
Do they decide not to 'bombard' teams with their bigs or elect not to use their depth when on the road?

We've always been better on the road then at home....literally always except for the time when the Jazz got Hornaceck.
The altitude is the key reason here but it works for and against us.
For us- Opponents get exhausted much quicker.
Against us- When opponents play at home, they don't get exhausted due to the altitude and so they play at a much higher level than the Jazz are accustomed to.

Cause we got lots of player at his contract year. This is maybe not the only but a huge factor IMO.

And having the best bench in the league ofc.

...not a drastic difference. Most teams play much better at home than on the road. The Jazz are no different. 10-18 on the road is where a 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th seed would be.

Even when the Jazz were an elite team with Stockton, Malone, etc., they generally finished around .500 on the road. If the Jazz could just be a .500 team on the road, they'd be right in the mix for home court advantage in the first round.
