Following potential 2013 draftees

Saric's biggest positive is a natural feel for basketball and a high IQ. I like those things a lot, but if he can't shoot or defend, then he isn't a NBA player, no matter how smart he is.

I'm assuming the board just communicates with NBA personnel to gauge interest in players and reports back to those players as accurately as possible.

Hard to see teams telling the board they don't want these guys though. Wouldn't most teams want the draft to be as "loaded with talent" as possible?

Guys - an update on the other Michigan guys:

Anyone knows what the NBA draft advisory board does? What are they going to advise them to do, given that Michigan has made a deep NCAA tourney run this year?

It's about a half dozen NBA execs that tell the player their opinions of their draft potential. Of course it's a but of guess work.. but gives the player a feel for things to help aid in their decision.

Saric's numbers are pretty low across the board for this year. I don't know what league he's playing in. If you look at his highlights, he's not especially athletic or quick, and he barely jumps. He doesn't look like he's going to score much in the paint unless he's being set up really well. I wonder if he could play SG like Hayward does.

Are they partial or impartial? Don't they have an invested interested in the players declaring ASAP? Especially in a weak draft scenario?

That's a fair question. I think they truly try to give kids solid advice.. but it would be less than prudent to think they can do so without bias.

So wait, you are fine drafting a kid that has shown flashes in a low level league in Greece who also has some of the same concerns but you hate Saric that has proved to be the best player on a team that won the Euro championship for his age group?

Yea, that makes total sense. Keep on trollin'.

Shows the same concerns? What?

I would predict that McGary should enter the draft. I don't think he's going to get much better as a college player unless he starts scoring from all over the floor all of a sudden.

Saric is much more polished and a safer bet than Giannis. I will say that Giannis has a higher ceiling but he also has a much longer journey to reach that ceiling.

He should go pro if he's hearing 1st round .. and he is.

Giannis, 1st of all, has incredible defensive potential with his length. His athletic ability is also clearly capable of being improved once he grows into his freakishly freaky body.

Last time I checked, the league Giannis was in, he shot 70% from the foul line.

Can't shoot and rarely defends. Yes, he's shown flashes but so has every other player ever drafted because they have "potential".

Not same concerns. Everything about Giannis stems from rawness, everything about Saric stems from lack of athletic ability and sucking.

Giannis is a bit longer and quicker than Saric, and also a more aggressive scorer....although both are young. A debate about Giannis vs. Saric might sound a bit like a debate over Paul George vs. Gordon Hayward. I think Saric will be a good player though. He does a lot for a guy who's 6'10". He just doesn't look like a big-time scorer and seems more like a facilitator, kick-out guy.

Obviously information isn't going to be perfect, but the process is just about collecting as much information as possible. One team may have an interest in having a player declare now, one may have interest in him staying in college, it probably balances out.
