Is Evans pretty much a lock to make the roster at thispoint?

Thoughts?

...looks like he's doing some kind of hopper dance...so I'd say no! We need fundamentally sound players with athletic ability....not ESPN highlight clowns who are more interested in themselves rather than the team!

I don't see how he couldn't be. Put him on the Paul Millsap (salary) track and see where the road leads. He might even be able to help us this year, although I don't see a lot of minutes for him unless somebody gets hurt.

I think he is pretty much a lock but he might spend much of his time in the D-League.

Anyone knows why Thompson and Nichols didn't play in the game vs. Blazers?

Does Evans remind anyone else of former Jazz man, Carey Scurry? He had the same type of hops and was a good energy player.

A lot of people around the organization think that he is going to play THIS year.

If the Jazz are smart they will give him a deal similar to what Millsap signed his rookie year that has team options for years 2 and 3. Will help avoid a Mathews situation.

I still can't believe that the Jazz once they realized that he was going to be their starting 2 guard didnt just offer a guranteed extension. Still bugs me. KOC is a really good GM, but there is no doubt that he plays things a little too conservative sometimes.

Two flaws with that plan. First, you can't extend a one-year contract. Also can't extend a two or three-year contract. To extend any contract, you have to be at least three years into the deal...so there was no way to extend Matthews.

Second, Matthews also knew he was their starting 2 guard and that he was going to get a raise in the summer. Even if the Jazz could have offered an extension, why would he have signed it? Unless they offered big money (which they couldn't), I'm sure he would ahve taken his chances in the summer.

Fair enough. Did not know the extension rules.

It still would have been a risk for Mathews not to sign an extension. Could have gotten seriously injured, or found no market in the summer. None-the-less the situation I think clearly showed that the Jazz had no clue what they had with Mathews.

At the point the contract was signed. (before training camp) no one in the entire league new what the Jazz had in Mathews. Thus the reason he went undrafted. Utah at least thought he had potential thats why he was in camp but before the injuries to Korver and CJ not may people any place thought he would even make the team.

Ahh, that's some classic CJ right here folks.

I'm on the Evans bandwagon, I will love him like I did Sap when he first came to the Jazz. Hustle and determination, I love that!

Epic Fail.

Deseret News said:
Evans' athleticism isn't the only thing making the team excited about his future. He's also grasping an offensive system that has many moving parts.

"He's a pretty intelligent basketball player, not just (with) athletic ability," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "His intelligence of seeing and knowing what's going on is not by accident.

"A lot of people have got the athletic ability," Sloan added, "but they can't do anything with it. He seems to do quite a bit."

My complaint is that they didn't sign him to a two year deal (with second year being a team option possibly) to begin with. When it comes down to it, even if they didn't have an option and it was simply a two year deal, what do you have to lose when the contract's at that cheap a price tag?
