Warriors and Jazz Mega Trade

Latest out of LA is that the Lakers would be willing to do a S&T for the expirings IF Barnes or Thompson is included. So basically what we've been saying. Too bad LA appears ready to agree to those terms. We don't have leverage anymore. Oh well, let GS decide on this one. I'm actually hoping Atlanta is a late choice for Dwight so he can join his buddy, Josh.

We'll see. I was under the impression that LAL will ask for Barnes AND Thompson.

TBH, I think the Ws giving up both Thompson and Barnes would make Dwight less inclined to go to GS. If the Lakers hold the line on the S+T with the Ws, it might prevent Dwight from picking GS. That's why the Ws can't rely on the Lakers to help them. If it comes down to the Lakers agreeing to do a sign-and-trade, the Lakers might dictate which team Dwight goes to by agreeing or not agreeing to do a sign-and-trade with that team. Example: the Lakers don't agree to a workable deal with the Warriors, but agree to a deal with Houston or Dallas. I could see that happening.

The problem the Ws have is not just that they need to move contracts, they need to move bad contracts.

This is awesome that the jazz are already being mentioned in rumors like this... We are going to get some serious assets out of having this much cap space.

Dwight is an UFA. He doesn't need the Lakers to agree to a S&T unless that team doesn't have cap space. Houston already has cleared enough salary. I'm guessing that's his 2nd choice now.

That only flies if the team he chooses has enough cap space to sign him. Dallas, Houston, L. A. and Atlanta do, but the Warriors do not. The Jazz, Hawks and maybe the Magic are the 3 teams best positioned to take on salary to facilitate a trade so the Warriors can clear space. The Hawks want to try to S&T Josh Smith, so they might stay out of it. The Magic would be in a tough spot to take on bad contracts (even if they're expiring) to help Dwight Howard land in his preferred location again. I just don't think their management can sell that investment to fans. The Jazz are in the best spot to make this happen, but they have to get real value out of it. No future protected draft picks after what happened last time.

It sounds like the Lakers might consider a sign & trade, but they are going to ask for a heck of a lot more than the Jazz since they're division rivals. The Jazz can take on multiple bad contracts and offset that by getting some real value out of it. If they could land Harrison Barnes (who I think could be very special with development) and maybe a draft pick somewhere (or the right to switch picks at some point down the road) then it's worth taking on a couple of bad contracts for one year. The ammount of salary dumped would save the Warriors a ton of money this year and give them more flexibility to put some pieces around their young core right away. The Lakers cant offer that. Then the Jazz can either try to buy out one or more of the new players, of flip them for younger assets before the trade deadline.

Dwight would get an extra year and $30 mil more over the life of the contract if he signs with LA. In the past, that would carry over to sign-and-trade scenarios, but I'm not sure now with the new CBA.

Nope. Sign and trade gets him the same 4 year $88 million dollar deal that he can sign with Houston, Dallas and/or Atlanta. Golden State will pay the same for him, but the question is how much will they demand to get back to do it. If the Jazz offer is better than the Lakers, then there's no reason not to take it. In fact, the Jazz would have to take more salary to pull it off, which would give the Warriors more flexibility right now to add pieces around Dwight after the trade gets made and he signs the contract.

Well looks like there is life in this rumor after all...

Three rival execs told ESPN tonight they think that Warriors ARE capable of trading Bogut, Jefferson and Biedrins if LA won't sign-and-trade

Israel Gutierrez just said on ESPN that he thinks that the Lakers will end up doing a S&T and taking on Bogut, Jefferson, Beidrens AND Thompson. He says he thinks that the Warriors value Barnes more than Thompson.

If I am Utah, I step in and say I wlll take on the bad contracts and Thompson/Barnes for a protected 2015 First round pick (top 8 protected). Gutierrez says that LAL are asking for Thompson/Barnes AND a 1st round pick. This way GS gets the pick instead of giving one up.

This way we keep the 2014 pick, and if we have Hayward, Favors, Kanter, Burke, Thompson/Barnes, Burks and 2014 pick. We should NOT be in the lottery in 2015 at all.

Heck, I'd do Klay, Bogut, Biedrens and Jefferson for a top 8 protected pick starting in 2015, Burks, Tomic. If GS wants assets back, we have some to give.

That would leave Utah at:

Burke, Neal, Tinsley
Hayward, ???
Thompson, Jefferson, DMC
Favors, Biedrens, Evans
Bogut, Kanter

Then next year, you have 34 million dollars coming off the books to add some real parts to this team.
