What's new

July 7th, Summer League Game 1: Utah vs. Miami

Burke had a roughing shooting day, but that will come around. I don't judge any player at summer league. I didn't forget how poorly Kanter played last summer. Yes he was out of shape, but he proved it was nothing to judge by.

Reaching? He didn't give us much of anything in this game to "feel good" about. I understand it's only one game and I expect him to bounce back. But you folks act like I called him a bust.

I was saying if you want to nitpick this game about him then use the 1-12, lack of finishing around the rim, occasionally not being assertive enough, etc. To criticize him about his killer instinct on that play in a Summer league game is a reach.

It's a pretty simple concept: opposing player is down on the floor, we have the ball, push it. He didn't do that, summer league or no.

You're making this call after one meaningless, summer league game? Really?

Ah, forgive me for commenting while the game is in progress. I was critical of ONE PLAY because (to me) it showed a mental lapse that I don't like to see in our point guard. Again, forgive me.

Seriously? You're crazy if you believe this. I would hope that every single time my kid plays in a exhibition game, that if he sees someone go down, he tosses the ball away and helps the kid up. Killer instinct? You're nuts. There is a HUGE difference between hitting a big shot at the end of a game "killer instinct" and being a dick to other human beings "killer instinct". One makes you successful in life. The other makes you a dick.

I liked what I saw from Gobert, although his post game is pretty horrendous at this point. He is LONG and surprisingly quick for a guy that size.

Burke looked lost for a bit, but I think there are a few things that make this kind of a setting less than optimal for him:

1) Adjust to not having the ball in your hands all the time. He looked a little lost without the ball.

2) Other guys are looking for their own shot a lot since it's summer league.

3) No real system in summer league. A few pick and rolls that I thought he executed okay, but a lot of isos where he will probably struggle a bit in the NBA too.

All that said, nobody would be saying anything had he knocked down a couple of good looks that just missed. I like his ability to get into the lane and as he gains a little confidence I bet he'll look really good.

Burke has had a VERY short time to practice with teammates, let alone learn our system. SL is gonna be sloppy and sluggish because of that for most every team. The good thing is he didn't let his poor shooting take him totally out of the game. Still had 7 boards, 5 assists, and played better D than I really expected.
Yeah, likin' what Gobert is showing already...

Gobert looks like he'll be able to block shots and defend. 3blks and only 2 fouls is pretty good. Varnado was the NCAA leading shot-blocker his senior year, and Gobert kept pace with him on a per 36 basis.

I didn't see the game, but it looks like Burke matched up some with Kabongo. Bongo was 0-4.

Thanks. You ain't dead yet??

So, what is everyone going to bitch about when Trey gets his feet under him, goes 5-12 with 15 pts, 5 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 TO's?

Imo, the two aren't comparable. Burke was being patient and sizing things up this first game (regardless what the Nancies think).. Kabongo is a clueless dude that will never get it.

I like Bongo's athleticism but his shot is broken. He was like 1-5 from the line :/

More importantly, he uses his handles to masquerade as a PG but he gets inside with no plan/vision and over-penetrates (like me).

He's done this for 5 years with no improvement so I assume he doesn't have it upstairs.

I vote corbin
