What's new

Who are you??

OK - I guess it's my turn.

I'm 5'8, 31 years old. I was born in Thailand and our family immigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand in 1994. Went to high school here in Christchurch and grew up watching Jazz basketball between 1994 - 1999 (the Golden years I suppose). We only got ESPN to go by here in those days, so I got to watch lots of Jazz Basketball through lots of playoffs appearances in that period. Essentially what attracted me was the selfless way Stockton plays.. I just loved how he kept passing the ball...also a very humble guy. I played basketball at lunchtime at school all the time imagining myself to be John Stockton or Jeff Hornacek. That was a great time in my life...

I went to University of Auckland in 2000, got a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics) and a Masters in Economics. In my first job I worked in a property development company doing Economic Analysis. My second job was at one of the Big 4 accounting firm doing International Taxation (Transfer pricing), really enjoyed that job actually. Work and study sort of ruled over most of this period so I hadn't really followed much of what went on with the Jazz from 2000 onwards...

Came back to Christchurch 4 years ago to start a family business, a small garden centre here in Christchurch... had a really great time growing the company/shop from nothing to what it is today... we grow approx. 80% of our own plants so it's quite a bit of work involved.. doing most of it ourselves to save cost. I really like the small business concept as we are not really risk takers. We can control everything we do. We just slowly but surely keep on keeping... Me and my brother have taken over the business over this past year or while my parents are gradually moving into the retirement phase...

As I have stated on JazzFanz numerous times now, I have been a Buddhist all my life, but I have since become a Christian (it has been 1.5 years now since I did the Alpha course that really changed my life). I now have a whole new perspective on life.. those who are Christians could probably relate to this. I'm also currently one of the youth leaders at an outreach ministry here at the local church, trying to help bring people of different ethnicity to Christ. Also plays guitar for the worship band. These sorts of thing is something I never thought I'd do. I was painfully shy and I was really selfish, I never saw the point in helping out others or even being "nice" to them seemed really pointless to me. That has all changed now.

Future aspirations? I do feel like God is pushing me to go back to Thailand one day to help bring Jesus and the Gospels to Thai people. I do believe in "God's Pure, Genuine Love" and that Jesus can really help to transform lives. Helping people to understand that there's more to life than just selfish endeavors and that with Love, forgiveness and self sacrifice, we can all live a much better life together. This plan is probably about 2-3 years away, if everything goes as planned.

Thanks guys & God Bless.

I had no idea you live here

A (adopted) Kiwi, eh? One of my great grandparents (my dad's maternal grandfather) is from Christchurch.

Wow, really?? That's cool man!! He must be from England? Most of the original settlers here in Christchurch are from there.

It's a great little city (dubbed the Garden City because people here really take pride in their gardens). Surrounded by mountains, guarded on 1 side by the sea, and another by the plains. It also has the infamous Avon River running through the city center...not to mention the Akaroa peninsula too... lots to see and do if you like nature.

You should really come and visit 1 day, may be in about 3-4 years time once the rebuild had finished after the recent earthquake. The city should be very interesting with a mix of old and new architectures.

I had no idea you live here

Well lived in Auckland for about 10 years, now I'm back here in Christchurch though. I do know about Kingsland, there used to be a nice chinese restaurant there also a Thai/Lao restaurant which had some nice raw shrimp.

What do you do in Auckland bro?

I Christchurch, New Zealand i

Do you find it odd that you lived in a place called Christchurch and didn't find Christ for about 30 years?

Also, I googled "Alpha Course" because I had no idea what it was and there seems to be a lot of Christian groups that hate it based on the front page results. I'll have to look into more, but just thought that was interesting.
