Discussion on whether the Jazz can get another 1st rounder

I think the Jazz are going to let the season develop and look to add a 1st round pick from any team willing to give one up. The one that I had mentioned in other posts that I thought might be available was the 2014 Indiana pick because they have a real window this year to go for a championship with the last year of hopefully a healthy Granger before he leaves and George takes his salary allotment over. And my offer was around relieving them of G. Green for Rush but they obviously got a better deal for themselves this weekend by picking up Scola.

Other 2014 or 2015 picks that could come available this year from contenders could be: Memphis, San Antonio, Washington, OKC and others if injuries hit and teams need a shooter in Rush, a defensive big in Biedrins (which would like come with us taking on years and salary), or Marvin Williams comes back into form and a team wants to dump salary and years for an expiring.

But until injuries hit, and until Rush/Marvin prove they are healthy and able to still hit the 3, I think we will be standing pat.

I expect that come the trade deadline we could flip any of the 3 acquired players plus Marvin to a team who is aspiring for a championship or pushing for the playoffs if we are willing to take on an extra year of a contract.

I think we will take advantage of our expirings this year to garner picks in 2015 and beyond, as I don't necessarily think we want to have 3 picks in this draft.

Possible scenarios of what a deal may look like:
*Memphis has injury to Poindexter or Bayless or Prince and need more wing/3pt shooting help and give up 2015 pick.
*OKC suffers injury to Perkins and needs a big to take the defensive load. We take on his extra year for 2 first rounders: OKC's pick and the Dallas Pick they own.... or Thabo gets injured and they are thin at SF/SG and trade Thabo for the Dallas 1st.
*Atlanta is playing well and positioning for an unexpected top 4 seed and they need extra punch.. .they trade the expiring of Lou Williams for Rush or Marvin.
*Wizards find themselves firmly in the 6-7 spot in the east but either need extra punch off the bench or are needing to replace a player after injury and we send Rush or Marvin.

As you look around the league their aren't that many teams that have a pick available to send or that aren't looking themselves. The number of 1st round picks that are potentially available to trade are very few.

Teams that realistically don't have picks to give any time soon:
LAC- Gave to Boston
BKN- Gave to Boston
GSW- Gave to Utah
Port- Owe to Charlotte
Dallas-Owe to OKC
Sac-Owe to someone
Charlotte- Owe to Chicago
Detroit-Owe to Charlotte
Miami-Owe to Cleveland
NY-Owe to Toronto
Indiana- Owe to Phoenix
NOLA- Owe to Philly

Teams who need to use a pick this year
Mem- Owed in 2013
Hou- Owed in 2013
LAL- Owed in 2013
Miami- Owed in 2013

Teams who are in acquiring mode or should be:
MIL
Utah
PHO
Philly
Charlotte
Toronto
Sacramento
Boston
Orlando
NOLA
Portland
LAL & Dallas even

Teams who might be open to trading a 1st Rounder:
Boston- if they can send an unwanted contract (unlikely)
Washington- if they are in the playoff hunt and or have an injury and in a playoff hunt (unlikely)
San Antonio- championship piece (likely)
Atlanta- playoff push/injury (unlikely)
Memphis- playoff/injury push (likely)
Chicago- playoff/injury push (likely)
OKC- playoff/injury/contract unloading push (likely)

So as you look at these scenarios there aren't that many teams who realistically would even consider selling a 1st Rounder in 2014 or 2015. Looking at this current landscape I think a playoff or championship contender who wants to pick up a player off of a non player team roster (like the Jazz who are trying to acquire 1st rounders) will find that they have lots of suitors. It will really come down to how our players play and what we are willing to take on.

If Biedrins plays really well we could flip him for Perkins straight up if they want to clear space for next year but we would need 2 high picks: Dallas & OKC
If Marvin Williams comes back to form we could send him to Memphis for Picks and Prince
If Rush plays well he is the most likely to garner a pick from any interested party.

Besides that it is great to know that we have a GM who will turn over every rock to make this happen and we have $3M left under the salary cap to make it happen. Heck a straight up Biedrins for Humphries deal at the trade deadline for one of Boston's picks could get them under the luxury tax.

But, options are getting fewer and competition for these picks is getting stronger.

I didn't read it. But in my opinion the only way we will get another 1st round pick would be from trades at the deadline. So probably burks and other picks etc with taking a contract.

I think you can also add Cleveland to that list of a potential trade partner.

They seems really desperate to make the playoffs this coming season with everything they've done so far (Adding Jack and Bynum), and if they think a guy like Rush could push them over the line, I think they'd seriously think about giving up a first for B.Rush (if he gets hot late) and may be take multiple future 2nd rounders from us.

If you'd asked me this question last year I'd say "No ****ing way are we going to be able to reap a team of a '14 pick".

But, well, Lindsey has already done that with the GSW's '14 pick, so I'm pretty confident he could pull another deal together (if he feels we need more young talent).

Stepien doesn't apply to past draft. All those teams could trade 2014 picks even without having used a pick in 2013. What they can't do is trade 2014 and 2015 picks Mem, LAL, can't trade their 2014 pick cause they don't have any 2015 picks. Houston and Miami can trade their 2014 picks.

Why are we so desperate to get 2014 picks from contenders? Yes, the draft is good, but that primarily applies to the top end. Once you get past a certain point...and certainly in the mid-to-late 20's, this draft is about like all others.

The way I see the draft is there will likely be 3 elite players: Wiggins as the clear #1, with Parker and Randle (in some order) not far behind. NO team is going to give up these players for other draft picks alone. Doesn't matter if the Jazz have the #5, #21 (GS) and #28 and #30. Those latter picks are not worth giving up a 99.9% guaranteed perennial all-star and franchise building block. You'd have to give up WAY more for Randle or Jabari.

I could see the GS pick being offered to move up a couple of spots (say the #7 and #21 for the #5) if the Jazz have a particular player targeted (like Harrison). And it's VERY likely a team in the 20's will be selling their pick for cash in order to maintain cap space. Just because a team traded a pick last year doesn't mean they can't deal the choice in 2014. They simply draft the player, Utah drafts their 2md round selection and the teams swap draft rights. In fact, early 2nd's are sometimes more valuable than late 1sts since the contracts aren't guaranteed.

Jazz will get more value from their expirings next summer as teams free up space to go after the great FA crop. Utah won't come away with the same haul, as part of their space has to be set aside for Hayward, Favors and their first round picks, but I could see them land a couple more unrestricted 1st's, preferably for 2017 or beyond, when money may be tight for the Jazz.

You meant to say that there was "no way we could reap a team of a first-round pick"?

Bro, reap jokes are never funny. This makes me respect you less.

LOL.. thanks NAOS, we've missed you and your dry humor.

wut the **** is with this NAOS ****? I get tired of the alt hysteria/suspicion around here. Was I that German Gerstaltenhammer, too?

Well it does get a little suspicious when you started accusing Honz of how well he used to post and how he's changed, etc, when you've only joined a couple of months ago yourself.

Unless there is a perfectly simple explanation, in which case I'd like to hear it :)
