Is this quote from Dennis Lindsey?

This comes from an anonymous NBA GM:

"Our team isn't good enough to win and we know it," said an anonymous general manager. "So this season we want to develop and evaluate our young players, let them learn from their mistakes -- and get us in position to grab a great player. The best way for us to do that is to lose a lot of games. This draft is loaded. There are potential All-Stars at the top, maybe even franchise changers. Sometimes my job is to understand the value of losing.

"I know that sounds crazy, but if you're an NBA general manager like me, the last place you want to be is in the middle. There are only two outcomes there: Either make the playoffs and be first-round fodder for one of the premier teams or miss the playoffs and pick somewhere around 11th to 14th in the draft. Either way, the odds are that you stay in that middle range. It's a recipe for disaster.

"You need superstars to compete in this league, and the playing field for those guys is tilted toward a few big-market teams. They are demanding trades and getting together and deciding where they want to go in free agency. It's tough for us to compete with that. So a high lottery pick is all we have."

Wow. I hope not, but I have to admit that there are a few things that he said that narrow it down a bit. Lindsey does have a tendency to say more than he means to when he does interviews, but I think (hope) that is one is a little too deliberate for even him.

The good thing about Discovery is that you could discover that the team is already good enough with it's core and that developing them is the answer, not the draft.

Probably Ryan McDonough of the Suns, especially post the Gortat trade. He is also just 33 years old, so I'm not sure he learned the KOC "No Comment" yet.

Agreed, but the Jazz being the 9-10th seed in the west this season would be worst case scenario.

Jazz are pretty tight lipped about everything. I bet that's Phoenix or Philli.

There is more to the article and it mentions "look at the 76ers" or something like that in it. It sounds just like the Jazz except where it says traded away some of our vets. I am betting it is Boston.

I doubt it. That team is legendary and with fairly recent success. I'm guessing they still could compete in free agency. Their GM shouldn't feel so helpless. I think the NYC/LA/Miami trio are obviously the power brokers in the NBA right now, but the Celts would be right under that.

That is true. Forgot about the small market vide it gave off.

Phoenix?

Probably Phoenix, even though their disadvantages aren't nearly as bad as the Jazz's (middle of nowhere, brutally polluted and cold winters, arguably the smallest market in pro sports).

I highly doubt it's from Dennis Lindsey - but it obviously could be. There's 8-10 GM's around the league thinking this, even though only one may be bold enough to say it.

I heard from a very reliable source in a pillow-fort at best buy that it was Phoenix.

Orlando. They have the young guys that were mentioned and understand from Howard that it takes a star to win.

Whats with all this "Gee I sure hope its not lindsey" stuff? I hope it is.. We all have been hoping for the tank. Everyone knows this is the only way to contend. We need a star. This next draft is our only hope. I sure hope that was lindsay cause if it is then he knows what he is doing.

I am fine with it being Lindsey. Shows he has an eye to the future while still trying to maintain an atmosphere of fight and effort to win amoung the players. Fine line and if it is him it shows he is aware of it and trying to maintain that balance.
