Actually, they're providing me with a prime example of the way out-group member are fair game for ridicule. It might be deliberate.

That would kind of imply that everyone on JF is in the "out-group". It seems most are fair game. Maybe that is just message boards in general.

Most are "fair game" within the socially defined and accepted boundaries, and indicate their interest in playing the game. For people not playing in the game and not interested in playing, the context changes.

How do you explain playful ridicule within the "in-group", aka powercircle? Seems a lot of this has to do with perception. You feel like you're being singled out for ridicule then you're being singled out for ridicule. You feel like you're being engaged in playful ridicule as a means of inclusion then you're being engaged in friendly ridicule as a means of inclusion.

Perception = Reality

I don't feel singled out. Anyone in the out-group gets teh same treatment. I'm just not in the game, yet nonetheless subjected to it.

An analogy: you're playing basketball, and there a guy on the sidelines who doesn't want to join in. The people in the game with you keep throwing the ball to him, time after time, even though he doesn't get up and play. Are they treating him just like they are treating everyone else in the game?

And a lot of times the ridicule is a sort of a "ping." How you send it back determines how you're viewed by the in-group.

Do you think if people who don't want to play nonetheless are subjected to the game, it's their own fault? How is that not victim-blaming?

Yeah, you are subjected to the game of socialization and group dynamics weather you like it or not. Trust me, if I could opt out I would.

Exactly. I choose not to play, even though subjected to it. The dominant group enforces its standards, regardless.
