Favorite Movie of All-Time

I was going to put qualifications for this but I won't. Quite simply, what is your favorite movie of all-time and why? Don't provide two movies or three or even a whole list. Chicks do that. Be decisive, pick one, and stick by it.

Mine.

All actors are at the top of their game. The interplay between them is amazing. The script is top-notch and very intelligent. It also portrays everything I hate about big business, greed and deception, with the proper brushstrokes. For me, I could watch this over and over again.

My favorite

There Will Be Blood... Everything about the movie (theme, plot, symbolism, acting, etc.) was amazing. Seeing it in the theaters was one of the most powerful movie going experiences I've had. It's unfortunate so many people were put off by the title and lack of action in the movie, but as far as story and characters go it's second to none.

Movies that just missed the cut (I was decisive and picked one, but felt compelled to add some that I considered)

-The Princess Bride (definition of sheer entertainment through story telling. i enjoy it just as much as I did when i first saw it as a youngster)

-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

-Pee Wee's Big Adventure

-American Psycho

-Malena

NO!!!!!!!!! Delete your runner-ups.................................................Good choice with TWBB by the way.

Only desperate females approach others and demand that a single choice be made right now.

Believe it or not, never seen it.

True story.

Good. Keep it that way. I would hate to track you down and kill you because the movie is pretentious/poorly acted/whatever your criticism would be.

Field of Dreams embodies the "Favorite, but not Best" argument. There are many movies I have seen that are better, but none hit me like this. Maybe it was just where I was at the time. It has a lot of stuff I love: baseball, reconciliation, and James Earl Jones playing J.D. Salinger (wink, wink). Love the movie. Don't see it.

You might be surprised. There are a number of flawed movies that I love simply because of a feeling of "elevation" I get when I watch them. I really like Cocoon for christ's sake. It got dusty at the old Stanford theater when I watched a Tree Grows in Brooklyn not 4 days ago. Ultimately when it comes to earnest movies it's not that hard to turn me into big softy.

The favorite/best problem is mainly why I can't post a true answer in this thread. I know what film I think is the "best" of all time. I'm not certain I could post a "favorite" simply because those are largely time and place specific.

I have other movies vying for 2nd place, but I don't want KOC to get his string tangled in his bunched up panties. The ones his mom laid out for him.

Brokeback Mountain?

Nah, seriously, the movies I remember...that impacted me months after seeing them were:

Winner:
1. The Killing Fields (sorry, bishop, I know it was an "R" movie).

Runners-up:
2. Twelve Angry Men. I re-watched that movie after serving on a murder trial several years ago. Moved way up my list of favorites after my experience.
3. A Man For All Seasons. Saw it as a young teenager, haven't watched it since. Maybe I wouldn't find it as impactful now.

That does seem like an almost impossible question. Like most other people, I have a lot of favorites in a lot of different genres.

I will say that my best theatre experience was seeing Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. First, simply because I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy guy. But the bigger factor was that I had no expectations going into the first one. I was so convinced it couldn't approach the books that i was totally unprepared for how good it actually was. I liked the other two films, but nothing can compete with seeing the first one for the first time.

Another film I should mention is As Good As It Gets. I generally *hate* romantic comedies, but these characters were just damaged and interesting enough that it really worked. I can hardly think of more unconventional love story. But the whole movie just gets me every time.

I also really like Aliens and Terminator 2, a couple of James Cameron classics that just hit the action sci-fi spot just right.

I'm also a big anime fan, with a lot of favorite anime movies. The Ghibli movies are mostly really good, especially the ones directed by Miyazaki... my favorite of those is Howl's Moving Castle. I also really like the original Ghost in the Shell film.

Of course, as me in a week and I may answer quite differently, depending on the mood I'm in.

You guys already listed some of my favorites but i'll just say...

The Matrix. When I first saw it I was like...
