Did you know thread

Post random things or facts here.

Did you know that if you rub a cucumber on the back of your leg it will decrease how bad the cellulite looks? If you have cottage cheese legs try this out and let us know if it works post haste.

Cottage cheese and cucumbers sounds like a healthy snack (and therefore one I won't try).

Did You Know?

Did you know, that potatoes are the only vegetable excluded from the WIC program?

Just more proof we live in a country full of stupid people.

Maybe because potatoes are super cheap anyway. Or maybe they are not viewed as a healthy choice option. Or maybe they are afraid of the rampant use of potato guns. Those things are awesome.

Potatoes are a very popular food source. Unfortunately, most people eat potatoes in the form of greasy French fries or potato chips, and even baked potatoes are typically loaded down with fats such as butter, sour cream, melted cheese and bacon bits. Such treatment can make even baked potatoes a potential contributor to a heart attack. But take away the extra fat and deep frying, and a baked potato is an exceptionally healthful low calorie, high fiber food that offers significant protection against cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Our food ranking system qualified potatoes as a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid.
Potatoes also contain a variety of phytonutrients that have antioxidant activity. Among these important health-promoting compounds are carotenoids, flavonoids, and caffeic acid, as well as unique tuber storage proteins, such as patatin, which exhibit activity against free radicals.

I like'em. I don't know if they help the mother produce milk but they're not too unhealthy and underrated as a food source.

Boil the potatoes, cut them into bird head sized pieces, add a little salt, olive oil, cut onion slices, preferably some tomatoes and some greens. Mix with service spoon. You have yourself a healthy and satisfying meal. Potato salad is one of my favorite side dishes while drinking.

Potatoes have an inherent weakness. They don't taste good. Don't get me wrong, they don't taste bad, rather they just kind of taste like nothing. UNLESS you smother them in stuff that does taste good, or treat them in some other way (like frying). But I have yet to meet a normal human being who is happy to dig a baked potato out of the oven, all fluffy (with potatoes remember that fluffy = dry) and just chow down without adding something to it.

What bird? Pelican or toucan? Or maybe sparrow or a hummingbird maybe?

Hahha you're right it differs. This is a phrase in Turkish kitchen literature. It actually refers to the size of the head of a pigeon. Approximately half or 1/3'rd of a matchbox.

And come to think of it, dinosaurs are believed to be the direct ancestors of birds; this could go way beyond the size of a pelican.

At the end of the seventeenth century, Tsar Peter the Great had sent a sack of potatoes home, where their production and consumption were promoted first by the Free Economic Society and, a century later, by government land grants. But "Old Believers" continued to reject potatoes as "Devil’s apples" or "forbidden fruit of Eden," so that as late as 1840, potatoes were still resisted. When, in that year, the government ordered peasants to grow potatoes on common land, they responded with "potato riots" that continued through 1843, when the coercive policy ceased.

That's a big freaking potato.

You have a point. But I could be that first one for you if you count the times I eat baked potatoes totally virgin when I have the diarrhea. It's really friendly with your messed up digestive system. And I definitely prefer it to the tasteless rice pulp. And I really enjoy it considering my situation. But it has been a while I needed a diet like that. I don't remember the last time I had the diarrhea so bad that I was on that diet.

Here is my favorite way to eat potatoes:

Actually had something very similar to that last night for dinner, only with Rinderrouladen as the meat.

Little red potatoes with a dash of creole is about my favorite food of all time. Those German potato balls are also the bomb-diggity, but I rarely get to eat them.

Potatoes are a staple carb in most eastern Europe countries. I never used to eat rice until late 30's, ( still don't like it that much anyway) all our meat dishes were served with potatoes and vegetables. Most of our national dishes involve potatoes. Here are some pictures of just a few delicious potato meals popular in Eastern Europe:).

Potato pancakes, usually served with sour cream or shredded bacon.

Zepelins:). These are like baked potato dumplings ( about 10x size) stuffed with meat or cottage cheese. Again use sauce with bacon and onions or sour cream.

Kugelis. Something like potato pie baked in oven. Can be stuffed with chicken, pork or other meats.

And final and most unique. Potato sausage called Vedarai. Basically it is pig gut stuffed with potato and spices and baked in oven. Served hot with sour cream or bacon - yummy!
