Okur's Defense

I was trying to tell some people he plays pretty good d. These were bull fans so they like booz.lmao. Anyway i think okur playts decent defense. Whats ther eal jazz fans think

You have to separate man defense and team defense. Okur plays good man defense but terrible team D. In todays NBA, team D is more important especially for your center.

You are right,. He cant jump or time shots being blocked but man to man he does great and moves his feet and least trys compare to boozer matador ds/Anyone else seen korver do that again last night towards the end of the bulls nugs game

Not sure what games you folks are watching. Memo is a worse defender than Booz. Slowest lateral movement of almost any C in the league except for Yao. At times he works hard at D which is more than we can say for Booz be he is a weak defender. It is why and he and Booz together were such a bad fit.

Okur's help D leaves a lot to be desired. But his post defense is very good.

Just don't expect him to step out on the floor and slow down Nowitski.

Okur is a good man post defender. He is quite bad at everything else regarding defense. Actually quite similar to Booz in that regard, which is why they were such an atrocious front court defensively.

I think we will have to wait and see. I think everyones defense improves with Boozer NOT on the floor. With that said Okur looked pretty bad at times and that can't be ALL Boozers fault.

That about sums it up.

so you think Carlos "the matador" Bozzer, a selfish a** who pushes his teammates to get uncontested rebs and rarely boxes out never helps but calls for "help" from Memo and Paul anytime he is forced to defend the ball and the man, is better defender than Memo. Good luck proving it. Give me a game in which Carlos' defense or let me make it easier for you a defensive position by CArlos actually helped us someway to win it. You cannot. Actually, people should consider the fact that Okur, whose role on team was really important for the postman on offense, was forced to play alongside Boozer on defense. Enough said.

The only thing Carlos does is gambling for steals because of the fact that he knows he cannot stay in front of his man even though he has the physical strength to do it. If you are trying the steal the ball from Duncan, Shaq, then you are a crappy defender. He is not a shot blocker and that's why he should be physical and use constant body contact to disturb his opponent, do anything to stay in front of his man and force him to shoot over him which will eventually help him box out and help him or HIS TEAMMATES get the rebs. Defense is not giving up easy looks to increase your chances to outjump your opponent by saving up energy by not commiting a defensive act.

The 82games.com stats from the past few seasons support the contention that Memo is a better defender than Bozzer (Jazz defense was better with Okur on the court than it was with Boozer on the court). Both are terrible defenders though (Memo's transition D, PnR D and weakside help D are atrocious just like Bozzer's).

Unfortunately, Carlos made up for his bad defense with good offense far more than Okur. Hell, the Jazz have been jut as good with Memo off the court as with him on the court during his years in Utah.

With the way Elson is playing (along with good minutes at the 5 by Fes, and the ability of AK and Evans to play at the 4), if the Jazz can move Memo for an upgrade at the 2, the Jazz could be real contenders THIS YEAR. I like Memo, don't get me wrong, but with the relative depth up front, he's not going to add all that much to the team when he gets back, especially since he's probably now the worst defensive player on the entire team.

You know??... This is a VERY good point and an even better observation... I can't say that I wouldn't be a little distracted regarding my responsibilities within the defense if I had to worry about making up for a liability like Boozer on the defensive end of the court...

Thinking back, I can think of quite a few times in which Okur held his own in the middle only to watch Boozer let his man blow right by him so the man he was responsible for could feed him an easy pass for an open bucket... And the whole way back down the court, Boozer would be chastising Okur for not helping... Well, Boozer... You have to give your help defense a chance by doing something to slow your man down!!

And anybody that says Boozer was any good defensively... I want to purchase what you're smoking, because it's some good ****!! I can remember a game in which Lamar Odom blew past him on about 5 straight possessions... That's just being downright LAZY on defense!!

I'll give Okur a chance when he comes back... Maybe he wasn't the problem... Maybe he was just making up for another lazy asses responsibilities!

Cocaine is a helluva drug.

As has already been said, he can play solid post D. That's about it though. I would say he is a slightly above average rebounder, though. Not sure if the stats back that up or not.

The real question is where will he play in the rotation? Al seems to be getting the flow of the team. So where do you put him and who gets less time?

Some people need to chill the **** out here. The fact of the matter is Boozer and Okur as defenders are practically interchangeable. Boozer had some more physical ability by way of agility, but was a few inches shorter, and Okur tried a little harder. The net result is practically the same; crap. Boozer was not a bad post defender and horrible in every other way, and Memo is the same.

And there's no question in any non-homer's mind that Memo would be the worst defender on this team, all things considered. And before Homer is money has another conniption fit, that does not mean that Memo's net contribution will be bad because he definitely brings value to the court (at home) on offense and is usually a good (not great) rebounder.

I've been wondering this, too. It will probably come out of Fes and Elson's minutes intially, but I'm trusting it will be a good problem to have. Elson has impressed me with his ability to play within the offense and get some easy points (especially his jumpers from about 10 feet out -- don't laugh, Fes doesn't often know what to do out there). Memo can obviously draw defenders away from the basket which could make for some great help for Big Al at his more natural 4. Depending on lineups, they could also play Sap, Big Al, and Memo at the same time for stretches, or get weird and put Memo in with Fes, etc. Should be fun to see, given that our 4 centers all bring something different to the table.

I considered the source... and then I LOLed like a lollypop.
