What's new

14th Tank Platoon

Just take the top 16 teams league-wide and quit worrying about conferences anymore. Seed them like a standard tournament - 1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, 3 vs. 14, etc. After each round, re-seed them with the highest seeded team drawing the lowest seeded team until you're down to just two teams left. It would make regular season success more important as a few games either way can greatly effect your playoff seeding. If the season ended today, 10 western teams and 6 Easter teams would make the playoffs. Can't say that there aren't a couple of western teams missing the playoffs that are more deserving of making the playoffs than some of the lower seeded Eastern teams.

NBA Playoffs (right now) based on this:

#1 Spurs v. #16 Wizards
#2 Thunder v. #15 Bobcats
#3 Clippers v. #14 Nets
#4 Pacers v. #13 Grizzlies
#5 Heat v. #12 Bulls
#6 Rockets v. #11 Raptors
#7 Blazers v. #10 Suns
#8 Warriors v. #9 Mavs

All above .500. This would have Memphis replacing Atlanta, that's it. Atlanta has a winning % of 45% and Memphis one of 59%. Only non 50%+ team that wouldn't make it is Minny and they are 50% even.

The coin flip is after the lottery. The lottery balls are divided at each spot if tied, so we would divide them at the 4th spot. Then if we are still tied after teams have moved around then there is a coin flip for individual spots.

I believe it is before. Ties have to be broken in order to assign uneven combinations, as needed. Then as numbers are drawn, the teams have to be slotted. So the tiebreaker has to be in place before that happens.

I think I see it now. Technically we were all right. The Jazz would be tied for 4th with the lakers, but the ping pong balls that are split between the two teams would be at 5 and 6. Celtics and Magic would split them at 3 and 4. If the ping pong balls don't divide equally then there is a coin toss to see what team gets the left overs. that same toss is used if neither team moves up in the draft.

You're killing me bro. I'm srsly dying.

We would not be tied for 4th under your scenario. We would be tied for 5th. This isn't a NBA lottery ping pong balls thing, this is just a rule of life/numbers thing.

If you're scenario played out, it would look like this...

1) Bucks
2) Sixers
3) Magic
3) Celtics
5) Jazz
5) Lakers

This is a factual matter. I appreciate the lolz.

You're welcome, I haven't taken stats yet or watched any other sports where there are ties tbh. Though I could still see my way working out somewhere.

Tied for 5th. You skip positions if there are other teams tied. Orlando/Boston tied for 3rd/4th, so incorrect to say Utah/LA tied for 4th, They are in fact tied for 5th/6th with 151 chanced to divide between them. So coin flip determines who gets the extra chance plus the higher slot if a top-3 spot is won.

BTW, last year the tiebreakers were determined on April 19th for both lottery and playoff teams. There were 5 ties to break. And, of course, the order is reversed in the second round - i.e loser of the coin flip gets the higher selection in the 2nd round (small consolation).

Well that might be true most years, I remember when Utah and San Antonio tied in 1999. SA won the coin toss. Who did they select? A guy name Gino. So some times it comes back and bites you.

I think the NBA should have done this a long time ago but may the new commissioner will be open to it. However, I think it is about money so nothing will happen.

How will this lose money for the NBA?

Slow Joe is better than no Joe

I've been cheering for the Jazz every game because I'm a naive little bitch and not a 'true fan' by UGLI's tarded definition, but even I will hope for a Laker win on that fateful day

Well if all the eastern teams go out of the playoffs you lose a lot of fans since the East coast has more people and media outlets. On the other hand, better playoffs and people still tune in. I just think you lose the causal fan when you have no shot at the playoffs besides all the cities in the East who lose business because their teams are not in the playoffs.

glad you know what you are.

Perhaps. But the EC is improving with only one sub .500 team set to make the playoffs. In past years it has been worse. Going with the best 16 would also make the lottery fairer. There is no reason Memphis should get the #14 spot - and a chance at a top-3 pick - over Atlanta. That's one change I would make: lottery teams are the worst 14 records, independent of making the playoffs or not.
