What's new

Marcus Smart with the 5th pick

The thing that allows me to draft Smart a year after taking Burke:

Pace of play. Burke does not push the ball, and takes too long to get the offense going.

Plus, two PG's on the floor means you easy swing the ball and pick & roll the best matchup.

Right now (ask me again in two hours), I take Smart #5 and hope Gordon slips to 9 or 10 and see if Kanter can get me Gordon.

In two years:

Smart/Burke
Hayward/Burks
Gordon
Favors
Gobert

Not too bad. That's a very big, very long, very athletic, very fast team. Indiana like. Not ideal out of this draft, but not bad.

Are we trying to win games 4-2?

Depends on what you're getting in return for Trey. I'm not one to just give up on a young, high draft pick like that. You go with BPA and figure the rest out later.

I don't get why so many people are so down on Trey. Playing PG as a rookie is difficult and most struggle making the transition. It's waaay to early to give up on him. Personally, I think a backcourt rotation of Burke, Burks, and Smart could be quite dynamic. As of now, I'm rooting for Smart subject to change.

Is Exum really better than Smart? Is anyone here really certain about this?

I dont know but i think its worth the risk to find out. (The experts seem to thinm he is better)

If all we have to give up is basically #23 to get exum then we definately have to do that

AKMVP, Please explain how Aaron Gordon fits the needs of the Utah Jazz. So we can defend better, but we can't score? Unless he's some how improved his shot in the last 3 months, I just don't see it.

Seriously, let's hear your argument besides saying he's the next Ron Artest. He can't shoot. That's all we need is another player that can't shoot.

So some people want to take Exum to play SG and not worried about the fact that he is shooting 3s worse than Gordon but don't want to take Gordon because he can't shoot? .350 3 pt FG is very decent for 18 year old kid - who says he can't improve ? Kid has elite athleticism and defense, and Jazz were ranked 30th in defense in all NBA last year. To me it is pretty obvious we need to focus on improving defense more than offense.

Prediction: Utah trades the #5 and #23 for Orlando's #4. Utah takes Exum at the Four and Orlando takes Marcus Smart at the Five.

Really want to neg for such a travesty. That would be nightmare end results for Jazz.

I've decided I don't want Smart. He seems.... unsmart. It's the BBIQ I'm worried about with him, I just don't think he has it.

This is my thinking too.

When I watch the two play, I might say Smart has impressed me more. But I'd rather take a chance on the type of hype scouts are giving Exum.

If the Magic select Exum or Smart, then they'll want to get rid of Jameer's $8million next year. Absorbing that could help us get Mo Harkless.

Here's the problem. The draft, even at 4 and 5 is a crapshoot. Even for the experts, try as they might, it is a crapshoot. If you look back at past drafts, the 4 and 5 spots are basically interchangeable a - some years, the 4 is better, some the 5 is better. I looked back at all the drafts from 2000 to 2013 - the #4 was clearly better 3 times, the #5 was better 4 times and it's a virtual toss up 6 times.

From a risk/reward stanpoint, history would show it's not worth trading a first round pick to move up one spot at that point of the draft.

But again.... all we are giving up is 23.

Thats not a lot to lose if exum only turns out to be average.... its a steal of a trade if he turns out to be a franchise changer.

I feel like i know what im getting with smart. A decent player that is not a franchise changer.

Exum might be that franchise changer and all we have to lose is pick #23? We probably wont keep that pick anyways

Marcus Smart
Chad Ford's Top 100: No. 8
Strengths: Usage, FTA%, Rebound%, Steal%, Block% | Weaknesses: PF%
WARP projection: 3.7 (1st among Top 100)
Comparables: James Harden (88.6), Tyreke Evans (88.4), Chris Paul (86.9), John Wall (86.6)

First in the nation in ASPM, which measures and estimates a players plus-minus from box score stats. Projected WARP (Wins above replacement projected) is 3.7 and that leads everybody in the draft.

Seriously OKState was terribleeeeee without him. The dudes a winner and a leader.

Saying smart isn't a franchise changer is shortsighted, imo.

Maybe, but that is what the majority of the experts think.
He is expected to be a good, not great player.

If he lives up to his potential he's a Dwayne Wade type player. That seems like a great player to me.

I disagree.

I think if he lives up to his potential he will be a tyreke evans type player.

Actually i think eric bledsoe is an even better example of what smart might end up being.

I like bledsoe and hope smart will be that good if we draft him

Also if nba scouts and gm's thought of smart as the next wade, we would have no shot at him cause he would be gone when we draft
