I'm still underwhelmed by this hire. I think that they should have been bold and just hired Messina outright. I'll be happy if they get him as an assistant, but I fear that it will be to help get him the NBA experience he needs for another team to be bold about hiring him.
I'm encouraged that he seems like a very detailed oriented coach, but I'm not sure I love this move. He was definitely the best of the top four coaches identified as finalists.
I'd love to be able to talk to Dennis about this, and hear his honest opinion in the matter.
The only thing I can imagine is that Quin really sold the Jazz on how loyal he would be to this franchise, how loyal he would be to the front office, and that he had a really great chance at bringing over Ettore Messina for a couple years as an assistant.
Maybe Messina doesn't bring that flexibility, as he wants to be given the freedom that he as a decorated coach deserves. Who knows.
