NY Daily News: #5 + Kanter + Future First for #1?

Joel Embiid had a stress fracture of his back only three months ago and last Friday underwent surgery on his right foot to repair a broken bone. There might not be two worse injuries on a medical record for a 7-footer to enter the NBA with, meaning he’ll fall in Thursday’s draft. The Cavs would have taken him if he hadn’t required surgery on his foot, but now they aren’t going to touch him at No. 1 unless it’s to trade him. One team that sounds very interested in Embiid is Utah, at No. 5. The Jazz can put together a package including Enes Kanter, a future No. 1 and their pick and probably get Embid. It might take even less, considering Embiid’s first season could be a waste due to his latest injury. At No. 4, the Magic can put together a package featuring Aaron Afflalo or Tobias Harris plus its pick

Not sure what to make of this. Considering the source, doubt it's fully trustworthy but likely moreso than the Favors + 5 tweet from Probasketballdraft or whatever.

This just seems weird. Why would we trade assets to move up to 1 and pick embiid. I would rather just keep Kanter if that was the plan, but no doubt if we could get one with that package and take wiggins or Parker I'd be all for it. Really hate the idea of moving Favors.

WTF? Kanter, #5 and future first to get Embiid. Yeah, they could do that or just stay at #5 and take Embiid. Is the NYdaily News like the Onion?
This. ^

If you really want Embiid, just wait to see how far he falls. I won't be surprised at all to see him on the board at 5. I'm expecting Wiggins, Parker, Vonleh and Exum to go in the top 4 picks. GMs love potential. Those 4 guys are loaded with it. I'm not as high on Vonleh and Exum as many, but I can see a GM making the pick now that Embiid has even more serious red flags than he did a week ago.

I'd do this in a heartbeat as long as it's a protected (top 6?) pick.

Burke-Neto
Hayward-Burks
Wiggins-Early
Favors-Evans
Gobert-pick 35

...would be an improvement on defense and fun as hell!!!

Plus, we'd retain the future GS pick and have protection on our own should it be a top notch pick.

I hate the idea of moving Favors also. I still have a lot of faith in Enes Kanter as well, but if this was the deal to get up to #1, I could live with it a lot more than swapping picks and including Favors. I think Derrick has the potential to be really good in Quin Snyder's new offensive system. . . not sure what Kanter's role is going to be yet.

Gobert/Tomic, Favors, Wiggins/Parker, Hayward, Burks and Burke/Neto is a decent lineup to start off with as you're rebuilding.

Right now Favors and Kanter are pretty even with both having issues so there is no way that I would include a second #1. Well if Kanter really can shoot the three than he will definitely have a role in Quin's system but for now we don't know his system and who will flourish.

I'm hoping they mean Cleveland could get still get Embiid at #5 while also getting Kanter and a future first. Im guessing no editor oversight.

There's no way the Jazz trade that much to move up for Embiid. I can see a package like that for Parker/Wiggins, but not Embiid with his injury concerns. Someone may very well draft him top 5 because of the potential he's shown thus far. . . but I don't see anyone giving up a boatload of assets to do it.

Yeah I suggested this when the news first broke about Embiid's break. If I was the Cavs I'd just trade down probably twice and just take Embiid 4th or 5th.

They can trade down now with Philly who won't see Wiggins now with Embiid out of the discussion unless they trade up to 1st. Then if Parker or Exum is there at 3 they can trade down again on draft day with the Magic or you guys and pick up even more assets. And they still get Embiid without the pressure of doing so 1st overall.

LOL @ Flc thinking this package and target is more believable than the Favors + 5 for Wiggins deal.

Spencer Checketts, the dude who confirmed the Favors +5 package, is the son of Dave Checketts, the president and GM of the Jazz back in 1983, etc. Spencer said his source that confirmed it is an old GM, who is now working in a front office in the league. Spencer Checketts is a huge Favors homer, so I don't think he'd try to add credibility to this rumor unless he believed his source.

This is actually a good point - I hadn't seen the confirmation, only the Probasketballdraft.net tweet, which I assumed was some amateur journalist trying to make a name for himself.

If Spencer did confirm the Favors + 5 package with a former GM/current front office executive, I'd say that's far more likely than the NY Daily News.

Good call.

Spence Checketts, the guy who told us the next head coach of the Utah Jazz was going to be Jim Boylen. Not sure that the dude's word is quite gospel. . .

Scotty Layden is probably the source of both rumors. And the Jazz could have been a heartbeat away from Boylen. Lindsey admitted they still had guys on their list that they hadn't talked to. I think Snyder and Griffin were just too outstanding to keep dangling. Quin came in, charmed the pants off Gail and the decision was made. IIRC, there was a report that once the Jazz had narrowed the field down to the four (including Gentry and Jones) and done their 2nd round of interviews, there was a discussion over choosing from amongst those 4 or holding the position open. Have to assume the only other candidate at that point who would be in consideration would be Boylen, since he was still coaching in the Finals.

I don't think he ever said Boylen would be the next head coach, just that he was high in the list of potential coaches.
