Marvin Williams 2 years 14 mill to the hornets

For me, this is DL's biggest head-scratcher. And, I think JYD was out volunteering his time with Junior Jazz while he was getting passed by.
JYD was not that great a shooter. He was high energy but took a lot of chances on defense. The fact Quin helped turn him into a solid starter gives me hope for the youngsters on our team. I'd much rather have Hood and his sweet stroke (despite his game tonight).

I really think Lindsey was expecting Corbin to play Hayward at SF with Burks the starter at SG when he "won" the battle to rebuild by making the GS deal. No one but Ty foresaw Jefferson playing 27 mins/per. Besides, the whole idea of a "tank" is to have a weak bench. And, as a backup forward Jazz also had Marvin Williams, who was expecting to play SF.

Understatement of the year.

I think everyone thought he wouldnt even get 10 minutes per game

I think being back in NC will make Marvin comfortable and maybe he can get a bit of his college swagger back. Jefferson and Steve Clifford proved to be a good moves, but all of MJ and Rich Cho's other moves prove to be head-scratchers. Sometimes it is the player drafted (MKG at #2) and sometimes it is the amount of money they are throwing at a player. I get the Hayward max because they had to overpay to even get a chance. I feel like Marvin could have been had in the $4-6 range per year, maybe a three year for the MLE.

WTF are you talking about? Many of us said he'd be starting.
Not from what i remember.

I remember everyone think that biedrins and jefferson were garbage that we had to take on in order to get GS draft picks. Some people thought rush might be decent but most believed that jefferson was just something that we HAD to take on to get the draft picks and that he wouldnt be a big part of our team.

I dont remember anyone predicting that he would start..... other than to make a joke about corbin vet love

^^
Exactly.
Then we heard the rumor that the Jazz were going to help resurrect Jefferson's career and the real groans began.

Has Sacramento signed him to a contract yet?

A player who is teh vets to JF gets $7mm per & people still bitching that he played over scub rooks.
And people still bitching about teh bitching
Lol

If I get some time I'll have to dig up some old posts. Everyone knew they were both trash. Corbin's track record includes giving heavy minutes to a guy who's previous stint was with the Harlem Globetrotters (Bell), mindlessly playing Josh Howard after an injury, not allowing Kanter or Burks to ever hit the floor, etc. the writing was on the wall. I stated Jefferson would start and that there was at least a 25% chance Biedrins started. I was off on the last one as he never played. But this was not a crazy prediction. I was amazed that there were even more than a handful of people who thought Jefferson would be sitting on the bench.

Here's a thread from 8/11/13 where OP asks how much Jefferson will be hated:

He'll start, so... a lot.

People are expecting Ty Corbin, the guy who played Kanter and Favors more than 30 minutes a combined total of 8 times between them last year, the guy who DNP'd Alec Burks for 22% of last season on top of getting limited MPG when he actually played, we're expecting this guy to be trotting out a starting lineup of essentially rookies, with no 'veteran experience,' overnight? Corbin will change his spots over the offseason?

Just because we've all come to a consensus of the direction that we need to be headed, and management has made some moves indicative of that, doesn't mean our coach is going to magically sequester these vets -- league proven vets -- into roles as bench warmers.

On a side note, I support starting Jefferson as it seems the only way to force Corbin's hand at putting Hayward at the 2, which I don't think he'd be able to come up with in his own.

And then Fish's response to the above:

I hope, and think, you are wrong

I don't think the jazz would've spent all that money for bottom dwellers and let all our vets go that are 100 times more talented and valuable.

I'm pretty sure the plan is to see what the young players can do, and if for some wired reason Ty doesn't play the young guys, he'll be out.

I'm betting the jazz have told Ty not to stress wins and losses, just improve his in game management, and help the c4 + Burke succeed. If this was any other year I'd probably agree, but everything the jazz have done screams the young guys getting a very long look. The biggest tell for me is the signing of Lucas. With a rookie pg the only pg on the roster you'd think the jazz with all that money would get a capable vet to start while Burke was brought on slowly.

Infection I hope this put you at some ease.

Other people in this thread, including Nate and Hack, acknowledge high likelihood of Jefferson getting a lot of burn.

Here's a thread from 7/26/13 where people are erroneously arguing about whether Burks or Rush will start.

https://jazzfanz.com/showthread.php?18345-How-much-will-Richard-Jefferson-be-hated-by-Jazz-fans

Jefferson will start, which I'm okay with as it will push Hayward to the 2.

The Core4's response to the above:

I agree.
Rush is coming back from a serious injury. I don't see him starting. I think the plan is to have Burks be the playmaker on the 2nd unit. Hopefully he will still get 25 mins/per. Maybe bring RJ out at the 8 min mark of the 1st quarter, bring in Burks and have Hayward slide to the 3.

Burks, who WILL start? Richard Jefferson

Bottom line: yes, a lot of the board, despite all obvious sense, thought Jefferson would be relegated to the end of the bench. But there were more than just a handful of people who thought he'd play quite a bit, if not start.
