Will Scotland leave the UK?

Serious? I've thought CA should split into at least 3 states for a while now. Staying that big is stupid.

Yeah, 3 states (north, central, south) makes sense to me. 6 is too many.

Also London has already offered concessions if they vote No. Either way Scotland will end up with greater autonomy so I wouldn't characterize it as for nothing.

Love your Holly avatar. Reminds me of the good ol' days watching Red Dwarf and Black Adder on Saturday nights.

I see little chance Scotland will be better off independent than as part of UK, particularly where it comes to economics. Scotland will continue to us the Pound Sterling as its currency, which removes any possibility it may have to use monetary policy to combat economic ups and downs and shocks. Scotland will be autonomous policy but will actually end up with less power economically. As a member of the UK, it benefits from the UK's economic policies, including monetary policy, and can benefit from other subsidies, economic assistance and monetary/fiscal support. As an independent country, it loses all of these.

I don't understand this type of hyper nationalism, let alone irrational nationalism.

Yeah, I think this movement started out as a symbolic effort and has gotten a bit out of hand. You proved your point, Scotland. Now step back from the ledge and let's talk.

I heard they were going to use the Euro. EU has already signaled that they would likely be admitted quite quickly.

I always find it funny when people refer to the smaller groups as nationalists. Most often the Majority are way more nationalistic than the minority. There is more English nationalism out there than Scottish imo.

no sarcasm.
imho there is no difference between dictator, monarch, tyrant.

Did you read his post? You do realize the UK uses a parliamentary system, right? The monarchy has no real power.

I think we should do a redistribution of statehood across all of America to even out the population of the various states to equal out the electoral college completely. Say keep 50 states, but parse up California, Florida and Texas with surrounding states, combine others, to get them all to within percentage points of equal population. Would be interesting to see what that would look like.

It's been done.

I have to go find it, now.

As BYU fan, I assume you're Republican, and I'm surprised you'd find the idea of carving up a blue state into several additional blue states to be a good idea.

I'm not sure I like the idea, though I think something needs to happen there.

But supposedly they would divide it so there would be 4 dems and 4 repubs for sure heading to the Senate and then 4 seats that would be up for grabs. In reality, probably not so much with Mexicans flowing in still. One of the proposed Republican states has 900,000 people - that would be so easy to flip with immigrants. There would be buses and trains full of immigrants heading up to that state 10 times a day. Secret tunnels. Immigrants jumping out of planes.

I've always thought that states boarders should be based on watersheds.

heyhey your messages are full.

I haven't followed it at all.. but this is what it seems like to me, too.

Anyone who knows the history will understand.

At least they don't need to do a revolution. The United States did the revolution with probably less than half the populace supporting the "rebellion". . . . and lots of "Americans" moved to Canada because they didn't see the point of it.

I watched a DVD about Queen Victoria the other night. . . . . well. . . . a lot of other nights, actually.

The Queen can't vote for the Prime Minister, and the movie makes a little scene about a discussion of that fact between her and her portrait artist. The artist offered the condolence that, it was, at least, still her government.

The Queen, or whatever crowned head, is actually the head of all the commonweath governments as well, which means she/he has a veto power over acts of the respective commonwealth legistative bodies, and presides over their executive branches as well.

One of the consequences of the American Revolution has been restraint on the part of British Royalty, at least so far as the public will know.

Isn't this Scot referendum just going to move the Scots to commonwealth status?
