What's new

2014 College Football

There's a disconnect. You're talking "over the past 2 decades". They aren't. I think most BYU fans would completely agree with you that BYU has not outperformed Utah over the past 2 decades.

But why 2 decades? Why not 4 decades? In the 20 years just prior to the past 2 decades, BYU went 18-2 against Utah. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_War_(Utah_vs._BYU). Ouch. I think it's pretty clear that BYU has outperformed Utah over the past 4 decades.

Or why go back 4 decades? Why not just talk about this year? I think a case could certainly be made that BYU will be head and shoulders above Utah this year. sadly they don't play each other, so we won't really know.

BYU has just played who on paper looked like their toughest opponent this season. Utah hasn't even come close to doing that. They've got a tremendously hard schedule still ahead. It's natural that BYU fans would be way more optimistic. BYU could very well go undefeated. Is it likely? I wouldn't put even money on it... but I think ESPN's forecast of a 20% chance (or something like that) seems about right. Of course, as nearly all BYU fans here have said, any talk of making the 4-team playoffs this season is ridiculous.

*pats self on back* :-)

Most to two decades because before that, recruits weren't even born = they don't care.

If go all the way back, Utah is a significantly better program. Did you know Utah won the game 70% of the time before LaVell and has won the game 70% of the time since LaVell retired?

Tayson him ranked 4th in the hiesman rankings by usa today.

But jazzman12 isnt even willing to give the edge to byu in his qb ranks (byu vs utah players)

And i dont even see the dude that cy has been yapping about (dak? or something) on the list. strange

If you look at a healthy Wilson vs a healthy Hill vs BCS teams, Wilson is the better QB and it isn't even close. Right now, Wilson is the second highest rated passer in the country. Hill is good, but Wilson is better.

I say BYU's RB's are better because of Hill. He is a very dynamic runner.

Byu and utes fans could probably argue all day about who is the better qb out of wilson or hill.

I guess i will just have to try to look to national media publications like usa today and espn for an answer instead of going with my biased judgement

Lol. Huge difference there. Again, statistically Wilson is a much better QB. All Hill has on him is a weak schedule. There is a reason why Stanford wanted Hill at safety and Wilson was compared to Drew Bledsoe.

And schedule is HUGE. Look at last year. Wilson hurt his hand vs BYU. His next two games were UCLA and Stanford. Then he was done for the year. Couldn't grip the ball after the Stanford game. Imagine if he had a couple of mid majors between those games to heal up. How different would it have gone for him?

I'll look for those stats.

green,

Based on your analysis of fact, why do you think Hill has gotten national attention and Wilson has not?

Taysom has lost to Jon Hayes and Travis Wilson and was 0 for 2 against Utah. Just because the media has him #4 in Heisman voting 2 games into a season in which he faced a HORRIBLE Uconn team and Texas doesn't mean that much to me. He's never faired well against a Whittingham defense. Sorry, but I have actual results to back up my argument.

Also, Gino Toretta has won a Heisman. Let's stop acting as if being mentioned as a Heisman candidate two weeks in is a barometer of greatness. Typical sheep.

Lol
harbaugh and stanford drafted hill as thier qb and at the time hill was thought of as a pro-style QB, rather than an option type.

I'm honestly curious why you think it is that Hill has received national attention and Wilson has not.

I have not pimped anyone or made any declarations, don't misjudge my intentions.

I agree about the pac12 and sec schedules being brutal and having a big impact.

BYU's schedule was just as tough as any P5 conference schedule besides pac 12 and sec last year though and hill played in every game.

Most teams in P5 conferences have enough bad teams within the conference that they get mid-major level opponents to heal up against. Again, im excluding the pac12 and sec.

Of course you have this opinion.... we have already discussed this. you are a ute fan
Like i said.... i will listen more to the opinions of people who have no dog in the fight.

Colton, I went back 20 years because I think that counts as "recent history". If you want to go back further, that's fine, but the fact of the matter is that BYU has only been the better program during a 2 decade run during the 70's and 80's. If we're going to go back that far, you might as well look at the entire series.

Then gino toretta must have been a great college QB........ which is what the discussion is about right. If we are comparing byu vs utah sending qbs to the nfl and how they compare then we can have that discussion too though.

I feel proud in the fact that if Wilson was getting Heisman hype for beating UCONN and Texas two games into the season, I wouldn't be touting what the national media had to say quite yet.

Woaaahh lay off dat Scott Mitchell/Alex Smith talk.

FWIW i think travis wilson is a very good quarterback when healthy (and underrated by non ute fans) and i would not be surprised to see him end up as a better qb than taysom when its all said and done.

Right now it just seems strange to argue that wilson is currently considered a better quarterback.
Basically any non-ute fan would have tayson ranked higher than wilson right now.

Taysom also had 3000 passing yards last year and 1300 rushing yards.

these two games are not his only ones but whatever............. if wilson was number 4 on a hiesman list then you SHOULD be getting all excited. I know i would.

Both pretty good nfl qb's............... I thought alex smith was amazing in college.

You are already excitedly touting travis wilson after the two wins so far this year. Im sure that if wilson was in the heisman conversation that you would wait until after the bowl game before expressing any joy.

Do you seriously think it wrong for byu fans to be excited that the quarterback on thier favorite team is being talked about for the heisman?

If derrick favors was getting talked about as the mvp of the nba 10 games into an 82 game nba season i would be absolutely thrilled and there would be tons of threads dedicated to derrick favors................. but im sure you would be there to calm everyone down and tell everyone that they shouldn't be excited and get rid of any hope right.
