Jazz Pre-Draft Camps and Workouts

At 6'9 George is a really interesting player to me. If he can really develop an outside jump shot to go with his athletic ability he could be a Rudy Gay, Danny Granger type player in this league.

Wow. Most of these players are not on any bodies mock drafts.

Jazz do need to draft at #55 and then sign 10 additional players for the summer league.
Might be the first time they've been able to get George to come in. He's probably been busy working out for other teams. If I were his agent I'd be concentrating on the teams slotted around 12-18, since that's where he's likely to go. Sure, you'd always like to move up. But you really want to make sure you don't fall.

As for the "no-names," some workouts would be at the request of the Jazz and some would be from agents calling to get their clients a workout. You never know when you might find a possible Matthews, Millsap, etc. so you might as well look at as many players as you can.

Jazz would do well in the 2nd and with undrafted FA's to concentrate on the players who have had productive college careers, but are considered undersized at their positions. Those are the kinds of players who make great back-ups. Why waste a pick on an extremely raw player who may take forever to develop - if at all.

Why do you love him? What are his positives? Negatives? What could we expect out of him? Is there anyone in the NBA that you could compare him to? I don't remember seeing him very much in college. But then again, I haven't seen many of the players in this year's draft...

My comparison is Josh Smith. Same types of athletes. Smith is more outside in, where Davis is more inside out. My guess is he'll be spotty in year one and make a big jump in year two, but he'll mix it up under the glass and be an excellent garbage player even without the weight he'll eventually put on. Once he has the weight and a year of seasoning, I think he'll be a pretty dynamic player defensively, and offensively a lot will depend on how his post game develops.

YB mentioned this a few days ago and the more I think about it, the more I love the idea. Trade down to #12 with Memphis (they really want Babbitt) if they lessen their restrictions for their 1st that we currently own to say something like top 6 protected over each of the next few years. We could still get Aldrich or George or some other BPA at #12 and could hit the jackpot next year if Memphis falls just out of the top 6 (which I think is fairly likely) considering we'd also have our own 1st and Tomic's rights (which could be an even greater asset if he improves more and seems closer to coming over) too to try to move up into the top 5 potentially.

Essentially, if we think Aldrich is going to be there at #12 and want him, and Memphis pulls back enough, it's a move we have to do.

Can someone post the D News report today. Maybe that's not allowed. But anyway Dominque Jones who was just in told reporter he had heard rumors Jazz were looking to get a mid 20's pick which would explain why Jones worked out for Jazz.

Well, it would make sense since the Jazz need some cheap players as they've got a lot invested in a small amount of players.

Check out the Walt Perrin interview, he is not a very good liar. He tries to avoid the question about players in the 20's. Also says there is one more player they'd like to get in for a workout, then turns inside out trying to avoid follow-up questions about who.

The thing about Perrin is that even though he tries to say the right things, his body language gives away his real thoughts. If you look at his interviews, he can't hide his excitement talking about Whiteside, then Paul George. His face just lights up and he can't help smiling.

Here's some juice from the Sacramento Kings discussion board on RealGM.

They had a work out today with Monroe, Whiteside and Udoh all for a second time. They claim to have some fairly inside guys posting loyally on the board, but you can take this with a grain of salt...

Post A---

Very early words:
David Falk is unsure of Greg's spot, trying to get him into competitive workouts in the top ten b/c no lock.
Zoubek was there as just kind of a bully on everyone, tested how physical guys were willing to go.
No one differentiated themselves too much, no one dominant player all performed well.

My take: Means they're taking Cousins.

Post B---

Update:

Monroe didnt shine at all. Got one or two good moves that had on lookers raising an eyebrow.

Udoh.. meh. Played good defense and is a work-aholic

Whiteside...Hakeem has REALLY been working with him. He's still green but ...he altars more shots than Manute (R.I.P) He'll be great on D!

As TRW said...Cousins is definately the pick (If he's there).

(Those were the stuff I got)

Edit: Oh ... It looks like if Cousins won't be there a trade between the Jazz and Kings could go down.
* * *

So according to these guys Sacto will take Cousins. If not, Sacto might trade the pick, which would be Johnson, Monroe or Aminu to another team, possibly the Jazz.

You can't trade a first round pick two years in a row. The Jazz traded their own 2010 first round pick and just have the Knicks' pick. I thought Memphis got the Jazz's 2010 pick, but actually it ended up with Minnesota (#23) via Philadelphia due to the Korver trade. So, I had it wrong. Memphis has a #25 pick from Denver.

Ugh if that Kings intel is correct, the Jazz are looking to trade up for Monroe? Please tell me that isn't so!

AFAIK the rule is actually that you can't not pick in the first round two years in a row. Typically that means you can't trade your pick in two successive years, but if you get someone else's pick (like the Jazz having the Knicks' pick), trading your own pick two years in a row is just fine.

Plus one because I like you (being an admin and all).

Thanks for clarifying...

So the intel about us moving into the 20's sounds as if we really may be trading #9 for Memphis' two 1st rounders as has been rumored. Please get those restrictions on their 1st lowered KOC.

Now it's getting odd. There are reports of Jazz moving up and reports of Jazz moving down. Guess it all depends on how draft goes.

Oh, man. The darft is rife with enough counterintelligence to make the CIA jealous. This is getting exciting. Its like a ****ing Clancy book up in here.
