Kanter traded to OKC

Haven't read through this before so sorry if it was mentioned but underrated part of the move IMO was the Steve Novak addition and subtraction. We acquired Steve Novak and New York's 2017 2nd rounder for Diante Garrett, paid Novak a few paychecks and then just slipped him into another deal. I always wondered why we acquired Novak if he wasn't really a part of the team plans at all, but now I see it probably was every intention just to put him in whatever trade we were going to do.

Btw, Garrett now plays for the Iowa Energy. It's nice to get something for nothing.

You can't be serious with this right? Jazz haven't sniffed the playoffs as a result of DL's direction. KOC built the 2nd greatest jazz squad that we'll ever see, and had us as consistent contenders for 3 years in a row. Let me know when DL builds a jazz team that makes it to the WCF. I hope DL rights the ship. But at this point it's OKAY to criticize some of his actions. How do you think he has done a better job than KOC?

Huh? They were semi conference fodder and were gifted that one trip to the WCF. If you know basketball, you know that team was hard capped because of zero interior defense. Fool's gold.
DL is building the team right, and already has the most important piece, an elite rim protector.

The one thing about this trade that has not been talked about is that Kanter is a replaceable player. Heck, we even have people on our roster who can replace his production easily. Give Rudy and Faves some more minutes, and Booker can pick up the rest. Kanter was taking us nowhere, and other teams realize that as well. The reason Kanter got traded for crap is because he was crap. Kanter is an inefficient scorer, with no passing whatsoever, and virtually no defense. His ceiling as a big minutes guy is Al Jefferson. That absolutely does not fit in with winning any playoff series, and certainly did not fit in with the way Quin is coaching this team.

If he contributes in OKC, it is not going to be the way he and his agent dream of, scoring in bunches while letting his teammates play defense while he stands around and acts like he is doing something. He will have to re invent himself as a role player and get the rebounds off of Durant and Westbrook's misses. That is, until Ibaka murders him for playing no defense.

DL said he was surprised by a few things this season which changed his long-term plan:

1) Emergence of Hayward

2) Emergence of Gobert at the C position

3) Emergence of Favors at the PF position with PF offensive/defensive skills

May be Kanter was in their long term plan at one point, but he no longer is and they need to go a different direction. I thought this is a pretty major turning point in our rebuild.

We now have the option of adding a solid FA to our core group and start competing. We weren't in a position to do that at the start of the season.

Aside from pulling Gobert out his arse that one draft, what has DL done right? Dump salary and stockpile 2nd rounders? The only other guys on the team that can play are Hayward and Favors.

This is Rudy's fault for getting too good too soon. Oh yeah, and it's Ty Corbin's fault.

signed three fair contracts for Burks, Hayward, and Favors. Matching Hayward was unpopular-- and it's proven to have been brilliant.

I don't appreciate the passive aggressive jab at my bball knowledge, but I digress. If it weren't for a Lakers team with a top 5 player of all time, we probably go to the finals one of those years. Even without an "elite" rim protector, that Jazz team is lightyears ahead of the squad we have now.

Favors and Hayward didn't look like much until the last year and a half. Give DL's picks some time. He got Exum and Hood just this year, and his other draft pick is Burke, who looks like he will be a decent player in a stinky draft. Sure, he could have just picked Giannis with the Burke pick, and Gobert with the other, but nobody thought Giannis would be the way he is, or that Gobert would. Draft picks take time to evaluate. Lindsay is at least using the other assets like cap space to get assets and building around what he was given to start with. I feel like he hired the right coach in Quin, and that is a huge plus to his management.

DL is good... remember Ainge was almost fired, and Morey was running out of time prior to striking their big deals.

Gobert > Okur
Favors > Boozer
Hayward > Andre Kirelinko
Burks < Mathews
Exum/Burke < Deron Williams

This team is better built to win a championship than the previous team. Give it time. It's coming together.

That's exactly it.

Things are happening quicker than expected. No one thought Rudy would develop this fast, but he is. So we have to make decisions on the fly.

If Rudy never emerges like this, then the whole story is different. Then we continue to go with Kanter. We wouldn't even have thought of trading him.

I agree. and i think that the kanter trade maybe causes us to lose a few more games this year...... Every little bit helps to increase our lottery chances. You never know, maybe we win the lottery and get the #1 pick without even having to trade anyone.

Big three of Hayward, gobert, and deangelo russell with a great supporting cast of favors, exum, burks, and others.

Its a long process but i believe that we are getting there slowly but surely.

That jazz team had 4 allstars (albeit in the span of 5 years) in their starting lineup. Please... take off the homer goggles. A 2006-2009 Boozer would compliment Gobert much much better than favors does.

Snyder looks like a great choice as coach
Re-signing Hayward, Favors and Burks
Hood pick is solid
Exum is a project but not a bad pick
Expanding the analytical side of the FO
Expanding the scouting done by Utah

DL has been good not great. But he must deliver this summer in free agency. Time to make solid trades and free agent signings.

To me DLs biggest failing have been:

Letting Carroll go
Not trading Kanter sooner

That does not make Boozer a better player than Favors. False equivelant.

But DWill back then was clearly better than Exum/Burke now. Not even close or debatable imo.

Okur > Gobert on O but Gobert > Okur on D
Favors > Boozer

That team worked better than this team currently does. But I think this team will end up being better than that one.

... Burke, who looks like he will be a decent player in a stinky draft...

Really? His 2pt%, 3pt%, and FT% are all somehow down this season, from last year's already dismal numbers. His Ast/min are also down. DL spent TWO first rounders on that guy. Exum has been even worse. By the beginning of next season Hood and Burks will have both missed a substantial number of games due to being injury-prone.

Seriously though, since reality isn't working try to think of some imaginary scenario where you could possible conceive of DL being a not-so-good GM. Is it even possible?
