Exum went #5 in a pretty solid draft class. Lots of quality rotation players and a couple stars. Williams going 10 in a historically weak draft, at least so far, is more excusable.
Statistically it's very unlikely that all of these guys have a "decent career". It's more likely that a couple of these guys won't even be in the NBA in a few years.
Also, really hard to evaluate any of these guys when they are playing on a team not trying win games.
Based on the fact that Philadelphia 2025 draft pick is top 6 protected, and they are currently tied for the 5th worst record with the Nets, I don't think there is another team with more tanking incentive than Philly. If they don't stay ahead of the Nets in the tanking race, it only takes ONE...
A few potential solutions I've considered:
- Run the lottery for all non-playoff teams. Don't just use the lottery for the top 4 picks. I think a lot of tanking is to ensure a pick is no higher (worse) than a certain pick number, and if you lottery off everyone that didn't make the playoffs, it...
In a tanking classic, Mark Madsen took 7 3-pointers in a span of 9 minutes in the regular season finale for the Timberwolves in 2006. He had NEVER taken an NBA 3-pointer before that, and went 0-7.
Who is our Mark Madsen Wednesday night?
We are basically on year 3, and if we don't land a really good player via draft (Flagg), free agency, or trade, we'll be doing the same thing next season.
Definitely a good ending outcome. I just hate the stigma that comes with absurd levels of tanking, similar to what Philadelphia faced when they were not remotely trying to win and got Embiid. I think our tanking efforts have even exceeded what they did.
I make a pretty mean cheesesteak on my Blackstone. Never tried giardiniera, but will next time.
The hardest part is getting the right bread. We've recently been using Jimmy Johns bread, which they sell for like a buck a loaf.
I'm worried about the ramifications if we win the lottery. The media is going to assess our season and realize that this has been the biggest tank job in NBA history. We are far from the worst team in the NBA. There will again be calls to change the lottery system.
The incentive isn't...
I guarantee this is not just about Lauri. We've been blatantly sitting our best players regularly and the league doesn't like how hard we are tanking.
If we were actually remotely trying to win, I don't know what our record would be, but it would be substantially better.
This is kind of like someone in massive debt and on the edge of bankruptcy deciding if they would rather renovate their home, buy a new Tesla, or go on a European vacation. With a projected $1.9 trillion deficit, and current federal debt of $36 trillion, maybe focusing on what NOT to spend money...
From what I see on the NBA Tankathon website, we have 6 games remaining against Washington, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Toronto. Laurie, Kessler, Collins, and JC 100% need to sit all of those games, and give Cody 35+.
