What's new

Game Thread Mar 02, 2025 06:00PM MT: New Orleans Pelicans @ Utah Jazz

Added to Calendar: 03-02-25

Since the trade deadline they are 2-3 with an average point differential of -2. It's only 5 games and their wins are not impressive, but they seem to be playing better without Kuzma and with Smart and Middleton.
Once again confirming Kuzma's cred as the emptiest of empty stats.

If they feel someone may catch them then I'm sure they can play the contusion game as well. Im pretty sure we have less leeway there.

That's true. I think there is a very low chance that we catch them.

I'm guessing they won't be too concerned about us catching them for our game on Wednesday though. So as long as they are good enough to get a win against us it will be a positive thing that they are looking better post trade deadline.

I'm both surprised and not surprised that nobody here seems to have either noticed or cared that Hardy was very unhappy after the game yesterday, largely with the level of defensive effort/attention to detail. Especially angry about how easy it was for Olynyk and Zion in the paint. Went on a rant about young players not being entitled to minutes.

Andy Larson went to the tape to figure out who it was that he was angry with. While he concluded that there were multiple culprits, he seemed to find Brice being the least effective defender.

From the box score: Filipowski, Collier, and Sensabaugh had particularly bad +/- scores, for what it's worth (or not worth): -32, -22, -16, respectively.

So I wonder if we'll see any reverberations from this in upcoming playing time decisions.

EDIT: I see @homeytennis noticed in another threat, so a shoutout for that

Is what he’s doing real ?? Haven’t been watching much lately
He is exactly the same player as the last season. The stats per 36:

2023-24 - 17.3 points, 39.1% FG, 33.4% 3PT, 84.8% FT, 3.8 RB, 5.9 AST, 0.6 STL, 3.3 TO
2024-25 - 19.2 points, 39.7% FG, 34.6% 3PT, 80.1% FT, 4.3 RB, 6.8 AST, 0.8 STL, 3.2 TO

...and his defense is still one of the worst in the league.

Keyonte is a bit better statistically because, like almost everyone else, he played a bit below his averages in the very first NBA games as a rookie. But if you compare his play today with what he was at the end of the 23-24 season he is exactly the same player. Yes, he is capable of big scoring games on a decent shooting percentage here and there but he also did it last season.

People just keep getting irrationally excited after each good game by George and totally forget that just in his previous game he finished with 5 points on 25% FG, 0% 3PT. He will become real when he either consistently delivering on offense or markedly improves his defense. This has not yet happened but the season is far from being over yet.

I agree with most of what you said except for the fact that the excitement about Key being irrational. He gets way more stick than carrot around these parts.

He is of the age where we should still get excited about "flashes" of potential. Most NBA players dont really put it together in less than two seasons. Fact is that he is 3rd in PPG and 1st in APG among his draft class, and if he ever puts it all together and finds consistency he may turn out to be a guy capable of putting up 25/7 type of statlines on a nightly basis.

The big problem is the defense, where he needs to improve a lot if he dreams of getting enough PT to ever produce such numbers in the future. Right now his PT is a gimmie, but once we get better prospect for his role it can change in a hearbeat. Hopefully Key realizes that.

Gut feeling, but I think Sensabaugh will s the first young guy to get traded in a bigger deal as the “promising young player” that often gets mentioned when vets get dealt.

At best he’s a throw in in a bigger deal, right now he doesn’t have individual value- maybe a 2nd predicted to go late in the round…

Wouldn't he need to be a promising young player in order to be the promising young player in a trade though?

His ceiling is too mid for him to have any value as a prospect for the future, and in the category of "proven NBA players" he doesnt rank very high atm.

He wont be traded unless its a throw in. But we have picked up his 3rd year option which means he should have time to change that narrative.

This game was a God-awful manifestation of stinking putrefaction. I could only stand watching the first half. It's hard to remember seeing this level of ineptitude where it comes to taking care of the ball. I'm not sure what the record is for most turnovers in a half, but they seemed intent on giving it a run for the money. This after two reasonably good and entertaining games. I had considered getting tickets for it. Man am I glad I decided against. Awful, just awful.

I don't get the Springer signing. I don't see what this guy brings to justify it.

Don't overthink the springer signing. He is just a body to throw out there during a tank season.

I know it was a good loss for the tanking but there are some frightening stats that keep showing up in Jazz box scores. Turnovers. steals and blocks seem like there is a huge disparity between the Jazz and their opponents. Last night there was a big margin in assists too. You cannot win games when You play no defense and have 27 turnovers. That is just a crazy stat. I don't know why Springer was given a contract unless they are going to include him in a trade. Jazz will have to give up some of their young guys because they don't have enough roster spots without a trade or two.

Non guaranteed. He’s this years Bazley/Lofton. Notice how they’re young guys who aren’t here anymore? Same thing.
