The Growing Thirst for Cruelty

lol

Again, it’s dumb and silly. But in this political environment, attention is what wins. This is what Democrats and President AOC must do 24/7. Legislate? Meh. But message the hell lot of things. Even if the economy is sluggish, make it sound like it’s doing amazing. Demand attention. Only nerds, like me, actually like quiet and competent leadership.

Most of the country likes this ****, apparently:

This **** pisses me off.
If they ever come to my elementary school while I'm there then I'm probably going to get arrested or ****ed up or both. Don't **** with my kids.

Do you know how much the people who do these jobs despise VIP tourists like this?

Trumpism is license for he and his followers to act their worst. There’s freedom in acting like an adolescent child. It’s why so many emotionally stunted and socially frustrated tech bros love Trump. While the rest of us become adults and act responsibly, trumpers revert to their base 14 year old embittered selves.
He appeals to the emotions of anger and fear, and people respond by echoing his love of cruelty.

“He played a video of migrants his administration claims are gang members arriving at a notorious prison in El Salvador, with those in the crowd cheering the images of deportees having their heads shaved.”
———————————————————————
Is moments like that, crowd cheering the dehumanization of humans, that illustrate the horrific dangers inherent in all of this. Same people will cheer seeing American citizens sent to El Salvador.

Voltaire:

Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities’

I believe, regardless of how far Trump wishes to inspire and elevate the darker angels of our human nature, there will be millions who will just go along. And maybe in any aftermath, maybe their children, maybe their grandchildren, will note the time Americans welcomed atrocities and dehumanization, and were unable to recognize what they were doing, while they were doing it. The age old problem of historical amnesia, and the inability to recognize when your leader is truly an evil man, his life in service to cruelty…..

No, former President Donald Trump did not shut down the national suicide hotline. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, established under a bipartisan bill signed by Trump in 2020, remains operational, providing 24/7 free and confidential support. However, a leaked budget draft reported in April 2025 indicated that the Trump administration was considering eliminating funding for the hotline’s specialized services for LGBTQ+ youth, effective October 2025, as part of broader health spending cuts. This proposal has not been finalized, and Congress would need to approve any such budget changes. Claims on social media exaggerating that the entire hotline was shut down are inaccurate.

Washington Post description of known US citizens detained and affected so far….

As the Trump administration races to fulfill its promise of mass deportations, over a dozen U.S. citizens have already been swept up in the immigration crackdown.
The cases have alarmed attorneys, civil rights advocates and immigration scholars, who warn that citizens are becoming increasingly vulnerable in a system moving faster and operating with fewer safeguards, The Washington Post previously reported.

Yet the true scope remains unknown because the federal government does not release data on how often U.S. citizens are wrongfully detained or even removed from the country. Since the creation of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in 2003, investigations have found the agency has detained, removed or issued detainers for thousands of U.S. citizens. A 2011 studyestimated that citizens make up roughly 1 to 1.5 percent of all removals.

When reached by The Post, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said: “We don’t have data to provide you on the deportation of U.S. citizens because we don’t deport U.S. citizens.” According to a Government Accountability Office report from 2021, ICE carried out removal operations against at least 65 potential citizens during Trump’s first term.

The Post drew from court records, interviews and news reports to document how U.S. citizens have gotten caught in the immigration dragnet since Trump was inaugurated in January.

I mean I thought I just recently saw a vote that happened regarding deporting US citizens that passed due primarily to republican support.

I mean I thought I just recently saw a vote that happened regarding deporting US citizens that passed due primarily to republican support.

Republicans on the US House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee universally voted against an amendment on Wednesday that would have prevented Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from using federal funds to detain or deport US citizens.

Obviously republicans in this administration are ok with it. Its right there in black and white.

Not sure what you’re referring to, I could easily miss something these days…..OK, just saw your link…

Yeah, this: “Representative Eric Swalwell of California described the vote as one of the “most shocking things he had seen” and said that he and his Democratic colleagues were “stunned.”
