An oral history of The Malice and the Palace

Just curious, who actually saw that game live on TV? I think I'm one of the few who did. I remember thinking that I might be dreaming, how could a player ever attack fans? Walton's comments were the best. He hardly spoke the entire time until it was just finishing up. "This is a sad....SAD day for basketball."

Am I the only one who thinks that fan deserved what he got? Unless of course Artest and other players attacked the wrong guys...

Seriously though, it made the fans realize, at least a little, they can't just do whatever the hell they want because they bought a ticket, and also helped force the league's hand to implement better measures to safeguard against this. This meaning dumb fan action and dumb player reaction.

Artest definitely went after the wrong fan, and on his way into the stands, he kind of vaulted off of Mark Boyle (Pacers radio guy) and Boyle fractured five vertebrae.

The moral of the story is don't throw beer in a professional athlete's face unless you want to get beat up. Of course, that one guy who got randomly punched by Jermaine Oneal got paid nearly 2 million dollars. I would say it was worth it for that dude.

Why would some old guy get in the way of Artest? His fault for trying to be a hero.
He went after the wrong guy at first, grabbed him and said "Did you do it" (I imagine in a Batman voice), but I don't think he physically harmed the guy. And if he did, I'm sure he got paid a lot of money in a settlement either in or outside of court.

I liked how in the article they suggest that if Jermaine O'Neal doesn't slip, that guys life is over.

I was at the Porto-call watching this just after the jazz lost a close game to Miami when Carlos Arroyo made his season debut. That was the beginning of the end of the Jazz season that year. The fight did take my mind off of the jazz loss so that was a positive.

on a tangentially related note, Dwyane Wade Sr. was ejected from the Bulls-Heat game last night for using profanity...

...While seated in the 100 level, the elder Wade was asked by arena personnel to stop using profanity. He refused and was ejected, the source said.

According to the venue's website, the United Center "intends to provide all guests with a safe, comfortable, and friendly environment. Our family atmosphere prohibits foul or abusive language, and any violation of these policies may result in ejection."
