Basketball Over-Time Idea

What if after two overtimes where the teams are still tied, the NBA goes into a soccer/hockey like shootout?

Each team selects 5 players to go 1-on-1 against the other team.

The other team can pick a different defender (or same) for each offensive player the other team puts up.

Winner is whoever gets the most points from the 5 players.

How cool would it be to see Lebron vs. KD in an overtime 1-on-1 shootout?

I love it

I also love the idea of the lottery teams having a playoffs (shorter than the normal playoffs though) either to get into the playoffs or to get the #1 pick in the draft (or maybe the winner gets the most ping pong balls)
Maybe the winner of the lottery playoffs would get to choose between making the playoffs or ping pong balls..... anything to change the fact that just barely missing the playoffs is the worst outcome possible

No. Basketball is a team sport. Shootouts in hockey (only in the regular season) and penalties to end soccer matches are terrible.

Players like Burks would have a field day in this set up. It would be fun and exciting.

I tend to agree. Cy's idea is kinda fun, but leave that one on one stuff for those dumbass sports where they can't score and that's the only way for the torture to end.

I guess you could put the detail in there that it would only be regular season. It's very rare that a game goes over 2 OT's, but it's crazy when it does and seems like it's pretty dangerous for players. Most coaches never sub out during OT's, so by the time you are in the 3rd OT, you have guys who have over 50 minutes played (or fouled out). The team may have to fly the next day to play the back end of a back to back on the road, it would be a fun way to wrap up a game quickly. If you had League Pass, you would probably switch over to watch these "1-on-1" OT's.

IDK, I just got the idea when I heard them debating "Who would win 1-on-1, Lebron or Jordan" then I thought to myself about how we never actually see any NBA players truly play a competitive 1-on-1 match. Why not do it after double OT?

Sounds fun, but I like the idea of a game ending HORSE challenge better.

I'm all for some way of matching up players 1 on 1 in a really competitive setting.

It's gotta be done.

I'd rather a game end in a tie than it be decided by a 1-on-1 competition.

FWIW, I also hate the ball being advanced on timeouts and time being added to shot clocks on jump balls.

KIds would probably love it, just as they tend to ask themselves these questions more frequently. A more black and white perception.

Umm....No. Hell no. And no ****ing way I'd stick around to watch that. It would ruin what was probably a really entertaining game if it made it to 2 OT's.

Agreed. There's nothing wrong with the way OT works now and I'd hate to promote 1v1 basketball. Has nothing to do with what basketball is all about. Would not be a fair way to determine what TEAM won the game.

It should be settled by Long Jackass, tbh.

Edit: I looked it up a little but it was later when I have found out that it is called Buck-Buck or Johnny on a Pony in English. Sorry for the mot à mot translation from Turkish.

Here is the 7th milestone for me. I cannot believe it has been that much. Most of them must be useless crap though.
