So I was at the gym and there was a pretty heated argument about double dribbling and the opinion on the rule was pretty much split 50/50.

If a player receives a poor pass or doesn't handle a rebound properly, causing the ball to hit the ground, can the player regain possession and dribble the ball?

I'm pretty sure you can because I swear I see it happen in the NBA all the time, but not 100% certain. Anyone here more knowledgeable on rules know?

So the ball hits the players hands, then hits the ground, then the player holds the ball before dribbling?

I'd call it a double dribble, but I'm not 100%

Same question if you tip a rebound it bounces you secure it. Yes you can dribble.

In the case I'm talking about its just a hand. Not like the player just dropped a pass that hit him square in the hands, but like a pass he had to reach out to even get a finger tip on it. IDK if that changes the rule.

Exact scenario that happened: I was doing a back door cut and the pass came well behind me. I stopped my momentum and reached backwards just to keep the ball in play. Immediately after I was able to regain possession. I pump faked and took 1 dribble for a layup. Someone called double.

Wouldn't it depend on whether the ref interpreted what you just did a 'dribble'?

Comes down to ref's interpretation.

I don't think it's a double dribble if the player didn't have possession. I see it in the NBA all the time, I think.

I would think you have to have control of the ball the first time for it to be a dribble. Sounds to me like you were okay.

This is pick-up basketball, no refs, just a bunch of people who like arguing so they can get the ball.

Glad to hear. I was pretty sure I was right, I wanted to punch the guy who kept arguing about it.
