Reading Ben's article on KSL.com yesterday and trying to 'see' the positions and coverage and reconcile the 'wing' positions... so, this may or may not help:

Appreciate any thoughts to tweak this and define the 'positionless' options Quin has.
1) do you agree w/ Ben that only NWG, Oni, Gobert and Bradley are position limited?
I think Conley PG only - hell of a PG, but when he's in, he's playing point!
2) above offense only, but Oni better cover Wing position, or his minutes will be very limited
3) Royce can fill a BIG role this year, if he can gaurd-up and cover the 4, and see Green critical here too.
4) With all the 'shooters' in 3/4, are we okay without a Stretch 5? Rudy seems to do well agains KAT, Embiid, Jokic, etc... Davis is going to be GREAT, but will be interesting to see how we guard them this year.
Appreciate the thoughts - fun to see how this roster develops!
 
I like the attempt to visualize. Here's what I see differently:

1) It seems this chart is more offensively defined than defensively. I'd prefer to prioritize defense in the visualization.

2) I think the chart (correctly) recognizes Conley as a PG only, contrary to what you imply with your #1

3) Exum, Oni, and perhaps Mudiay should be able to guard SFs on occasion

4) Though I don't like Ingles at the 4 often, I think he'll be there a bit.

5) I see Howard as more of a 3/4 than a 2/3. I see him physically/role-wise as basically a Trevor Ariza type, but probably not with the quickness to guard 2s in most circumstances.

6) I see Niang and Brantley as mainly only PFs.

7) I suppose you could imaging Green or Brantley as a stretch 5 in unusual circumstances, but it is correct that we don't have a real stretch 5. That doesn't matter much on defense, but it's a limitation to our optionality on offense.

Agree. Stretch 5 is nice, but if he is setting screens then he will pull his man away from the basket... otherwise the ball handler is open for a shot. Where the offense really stalled was when Ricky was handling the ball and the defense sagged on everything. If DM wasn't hitting shots you could do the same with him. All the guys running PnR action except Dante are good/great shooters... floor will have more space now... offense should be soooooo much better.

Agreed. It wouldn't hurt to have someone roaming the paint as well to soak up ORebs, second chance putbacks, and passing out as well.
 
Jingles is probably more capable of playing the 4 than Bojan is. Oni'll be fine at the 3. Don't really know Howard very well, but maybe he could play some 4 too?

1) yep, as chart notes at top, position by offense. but you've given me an idea to add a line below each player showing defensive coverage... try tonight
2) Ben was one who didn't include Conley as 'position limited', but like you, I don't think you move him out of PG position
3) agree on Exum, Oni on Defense... will try and show

Conley - PG only.
NWG - PG only.
Exum - probably not really playing much PG. Mostly 2, occasionally 3.
Mudiay - I don't even know. 1 and 2.
Mitchell - 1 and 2.
JWF - Garbage time. Probably comes in as a 2, because NWG is also getting garbage time.
Oni - 2 & 3.
Howard - 3 & 4.
Royce - 2, 3 and 4.
Ingles - 2, 3, and occasional 4.
Bogey - 3 and moderate amount of 4.
Niang - probably just the 4.
Brantley - 4.
Davis - Pretty much just the 5, but there will be brief occasions where he's at the 4 next to Gobert, such as maybe playing AD and Boogie, or as a defensive substitution late game.
Gobert - 5.
 
Oni is a wing

Dante should be listed 1-3 imo

Brantley is a 4/5

JWF is a 2 in a 1's body

Howard is a 3/4 from what little I've seen in clips

I agree with that list. Out of the guys below the line I would guess that Howard is the first guy to make his way into the rotation.

You could very well be right. I know so little of him that I had him way down there. I hope he proves me wrong... very wrong.
 
Green may not be really a center to be a stretch 5, but if he can make his way there occasionally, i like even more the switch posibilities we may have, fearing less of Gobert being taken out of the paint (though keep him there is our main target), or go more for this "switch everything" way of defending when playing Ed Davis, cause then there'll be no one as Gobert or Favors protecting the rim.
 
With the addition of Kidd, do we not sign someone else, or do we have some sort of trade in the works? Isn’t that 18 with 2 2-ways?
 
Stretch 5 draws the center away from rim so if Jazz got one, it would bring a lot of easy points inside with that deep roster outplaying the opposition bench.
 
This will be by far the most versatile roster Quin has had to work with since he's been here. I'm really excited to see how he handles the rotation.

He’s going to go full Thibodeau and play Conley / Mitchell / Ingles / Bogdanovic / Gobert will each get 40 minutes and Exum / O’Neale / Green / Davis will get the rest.
