Seattle Supersonics drafted Kevin Durant with the #2 pick.
The Sonics finished with a 20-62 record.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Westbrook #4 and Ibaka #24.
The Thunder finished with a 23-59 record.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Harden with the #3 pick.
The Thunder finished with a 50-32 record and made the playoffs at #8.
The OKC Thunder then drafted Eric Bledsoe with the #18 pick.
The Thunder finished with a 55-27 record and made the playoffs at #4.

Now:

Derrick Favors got extended for 4 years.
We are looking to do the same for Hayward.

Should we expect to see a more aggressive rise than that of the Thunder?
Will our team be a contender before the tail end of the extensions?

In 4 years OKC drafted 3 superstar players and one that will probably be an all-star. It's like they never make bad draft choices. Unbelievable.

Imagine if the Thunder kept Bledsoe. They would have a championship by now.
Od that they got rid of Harden from their three considering that after he was drafted and signed they won 25+ games that season and just adding Westbrook to Durant was 3 wins. Harden and Durant + Bledsoe is a more affordable and possibly as good threesome as Durant, Harden, and Westbrook.

Don't think they'd be as good, but they'd be more affordable. Bledsoe, harden and Durant unfortunately are ball hogs ;)

edit: westbrook is also someone who needs the ball in his hands of course, but he's a better one than Bledsoe. And if Bledsoe stays the better defender once he getts starters minutes or starts coasting defensively like 90% of the league's starting PGs has yet to be seen.

Unfortunately our situation is nothing like the Thunder as they had multiple superstars and we have 0.

Thing is you can't really control when your nucleus breaks up. Maybe Utah would have liked to ride out the D-Will train, but once D-Will went, they still had too much complementary quality players to suck too hard while getting mediocre picks in weaker drafts and traded for one high pick who seems capable to have a breakout year this season. And this season is about tanking so hard you can draft your "Durant" in a strong draft. And with a little bit luck you can grab a 2nd strong rotation player as well.

And I don't count missing on George, as 8 other teams did that as well(No disrespect to Wall, Cousins and Monroe, but George is a whole different calibre of a player)
George was a late bloomer, hidden gem. Most of the things he does well right now, he wasn't doing them playing at a small college.

Jazz make the playoffs next season. Book it.

I am trying to look ahead. Honestly, I cannot remember seeing a situation where one draft pick turned the same team from zeros to heroes.

1. If we come dead last
2. And draft the right pick (Durant not Oden)

Where will we be if we do not make further acquisitions in FA? I find the sentiment on the board is tank = success but there seems to be a whole lotta luck involved and it still will not happen overnight. We will need to make good free agent acquisitions.

this team will not count only on this draft pick, even if it's future all-star

we have a really good core already, but this draft pick supposedly will take us to the next level, to not be average again

why we are losing so bad? lindsay knows his business

You can't remember a situation where a player acquired in the draft radically changed the fortunes of a team? I guess this must be your first year watching the NBA, right?

If we get a build-around piece in this draft, then our additions next off-season won't just be "one or two new players" from the draft. This roster was made to scrap and rebuild this off-season. The reason our team is so bad is because the players around the "core 4". And all those guys will be gone next season. We won't just be adding players from the draft, but free agents. The draft is the most important step for us, true, but with the CBA and our cap flexibility it's hardly the only part.

People don't understand--this team was built to sink; we have four, maybe five NBA players on this team who are active right now. I guarantee Lindsey, when pitching his season plan to Miller, walked in with a picture of the Titanic and John Lucas photo-shopped as the captain, while Beidrins and Jefferson play violin.

Admittedly, I don't think the FO was expecting our PG situation to be this atrocious. We're not going to win any games until Burke comes back or one of the 4 has a huge game, whichever happens first. If you could do it again, maybe you give a multi year contract to Ridnour just so our guys aren't getting crushed so brutally.

Basically: Relax. We wanted this. It's widely agreed upon that the middle of the NBA is the worst place to be--if the name of the game boils down simply to just acquiring assets, you'll acquire more of them by blowing up your team, taking on putrid players for picks, and then having high draft picks because of the putrid players. If you can't compete, lose.

We are losing.

Best post by far this month!!!!!

Remember when the suns made the largest leap in games won by Drafting Amare and adding Nash!!!!

29 wins in 03 then 62 wins in 04!!

There is a word for that: luck.

We might not win games when Trey does come back. He is a rookie with stunted development due to injury and already somewhat shaky confidence. Don't expect him to average 20 pt 15 assts 3 steals on 60% shooting and 55% from 3 right out of the block.
