Are the Utes next?

Colorado's move to the Pac-10 has sparked numerous possible scenarios regarding the University of Utah's future, but as of right now everything is status quo, according to school officials.

University president Michael Young is traveling and is unavailable for comment as is Utah athletic director Chris Hill, who is out of the country.

Utah associate athletic director Liz Abel said her school has no planned announcements regarding conference expansion and continues to follow the developments.

"Right now for us, it's the same as it was eight months ago," she said.

Some news reports have pegged Utah as a possible replacement in the Big 12 or as a Pac-10 member, depending upon what other teams from the Big 12 bolt from that league.

Several Big 12 schools including Texas and Texas A&M are meeting today to discuss their futures. Nebraska is expected to join the Big Ten on Friday.

MWC commissioner Craig Thompson released a statement following Thursday's announcement that Colorado has joined the Pac-10.

Colorado was thought to be a possible candidate for the MWC along with any Big 12 teams left out of possible expansion with the Pac-10.

Local radio seems to be reporting that the sky is truly falling.

It appears that the MWC is gong to stay intact... and consequently, left in the dust by the elite 16 team super conferences.

If this indeed happens, this is going to suck bigtime (for us).

Utah, BYU, TCU, Boise St, etc are all getting screwed.

Let's see, Texas and Oklahoma markets versus the Utah market.

Which one will the Pac-10 want?

This whole situation is getting ugly.

Being a fan of tradition, having Oklahoma in the Pacific Athletic Conference is an annoying thought. Never mind that this perpetuates a corrupt system. Never mind that local schools are being screwed. Never mind that the NCAA is sitting on the sidelines letting the inmates run the asylum.

Just the idea that Oklahoma is going to be in the same conference as Washington is just annoying. What next, Florida playing in the WAC? Why not just do away with conferences altogether?

From what I've read, the NCAA has absolutely zero control over conference affiliation. They can't do anything should they want to.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO STATES RIGHTS! This is Amercia, give me my country back morans!

Wow, Nebraska and Colorado have left the Big 12 leaving a couple of openings. There are rumours of Missouri leaving for the Big 10 as well.

Oklahoma's AD mentions that BYU and Air Force are being considered for two of these slots if the Big 12 can convince Texas to hold the conference together.

Castiglione acknowledged that BYU and Air Force are two teams the Big 12 might look at if it can convince Texas to help hold the conference together.

Awesomeness!!

Can you imagine if this happens and Utah ends up not getting the PAC 10 invite?? Wow!! Utha stuck in the MWC after all the postering would be awfully painful. Utah could fill the void left by Mizzou if the defect to the big 10

*Question for Ute fans. Are you absolutely dedicated to the idea of going to the PAC-10 or is getting an invite to any BCS school good enough? If Mizzou does leave there would be an opening for one more team in the Big 12... Utah. Are you cool with that?

If the six Big XII schools decide to stay to together and take BYU and Air Force, that Pac-10 would still be at eleven members and would undoubtedly invite Utah.

Why not Boise State? BSU is already in the PAC-10 with various other sports.

If Mizzou leaves for the Big 10 as is rumoured does the Big 12 extend an invite to Utah? Perhaps TCU?

That is one hell of a football AND basketball conference.

I'd think that Texas would prefer to hold the Big 12 together as it gives them much more power than if they joined the PAC-XX allowing them to create the lucrative TV deal that has been mentioned. If they join the PAC-XX the TV deal will not be nearly as rich for Texas.

Again, I'll ask. Do Utah fans really care what conference they get an invite to just as long as it is a BCS conference? Is the PAC-XX more attractive than the Big 12? If so, why?

I know almost nothing about the academics of BSU, but they might not meet the "research institute" BS the PAC 10 likes to throw out.

The Big 12 would need to fill the spot in the North division open if Mizzou leaves. TCU wouldn't make a lot of sense in that scenario. Also, the Big 12 already has the Texas market in its back pocket. Why would they need to/want to add another Texas team?

As a BYU fan, I hope you're right and the Y gets an invite.

I don't think Ute fans care, as long as they get into a BCS conf. I don't care where BYU is, as long as it's in a BCS conf.

This whole discussion is asinine. Utah to the PAC 10 was never anything more than speculation. I have yet to hear any credible evidence that this was even on the table. The local sports radio hacks going on and on never made it any more real.

I would much prefer the Pac over the big 12 but as long as it's a BCS conference it's not that big of a deal.

But now it makes even more sense for Utah to join Pac 10(well now Pac 11 and counting...)

Colorado was listed as potential MWC school, but like that was going to happen..we need to get out of the MWC(or invite the best from the WAC, which I haven't heard much about)
