Donatas Motiejunas vs. Jimmer who wins at 12

I've been reading lots of mock drafts and more and more projections have both Motiejunas and Jimmer available at 12. I personally thought Motiejunas would go higher just because he is 7 feet tall and his last couple games in Europe he has really produced. Then Jimmer went and tested much better at the combine in the agility test. Makes me wonder if Jimmer could in fact play defense.

Does anybody watch Motiejunas enough to have an informed opinion?

Put aside for a moment that most on this board want Singleton or Hamilton.

I'm asking in earnest why Not Donatas? Do like Jimmer? Do you have reasons to hate Donatas other than he is from Europe and they tend to be soft and unready for the pounding they take in the NBA?

Good question. Do the Jazz want a back-up point guard that might grow into a starter in a few years and would never want to be traded, or a back-up big that might grow into a starting center in the future. Darn my crytal ball just broke. Anyone?

I too noticed that both these guys look like they'll be available @ 12. I think it's hard to pass on a 7 footer with Motiejunas' skills but I must admit I'm a bit smitten with Fredette. Jimmer has a lot of haters that don't think he'll translate to the NBA. He's often projected as only a backup and not a starter. I don't know. Fredette's college numbers are similar to Nash's college numbers, Nash doesn't play defense and yet he won 2 MVPs. Nash is a pretty bleary eyed projection, but Fredette's a hard worker. It's a gamble. Motiejunas is talented offensively too and also doesn't play defense. They're like the same player, except for the difference in height. I wonder if Motiejunas could play PG?

I dunno. But I think you need defense more from your bigs than your littles. Don't know if Motiejunas is a hard worker or if he'd get into the weight room.

This is a hard choice. But the Jazz might opt for neither.

of course Dirk was quite skinny when he was drafted (of course i think he was 2-3 years younger), but if it really came down to these two the choice would be made pretty easy by whom we draft with the 3rd pick.

Agreed.

If you take Knight at three, it probably doesn't make much sense to take Jimmer, so I would think in that situation Montiejunas would be preferred.

Now if we get Derrick Williams at three, the situation becomes far more interesting.

If the Jazz draft Kanter, I think Montiejunas becomes almost out of the question.

If the Jazz don't draft Kanter and think Montiejunas can gain 20 lbs, decide to rebound and be a highly skilled center playing next to Favors, then I think Montiejunas could be a better asset and go-to scorer than Jimmer Fredette.

Montiejunas needs to play bigger and pattern himself after Pau Gasol.

Donatas isn't going to be as quick and crafty as Dirk, but he could bulk up and be a tough match up at Center. I think he's a better option than Tomic.

Well, I like Kanter more than Motienjunas, and I'm not high on Knight so based on that I guess I'd take Fredette. But not if Biyombo is still there. Even though they're 2 bigs I would be ecstatic to get both Kanter and Biyombo (Jazz would have to trade some bigs, of course).

I really like Donatas and if he is there at 12 you have to take him. I just noticed his review on nbadraft says he is a solid shot blocker. No way he plays no defense if he is a solid shot blocker. If he adds weight and strength, I think he will be a solid player. His potential alone is hard enough to pass at 12.

If I have to pick..... its gotta be Donatas Montijunas. Both stretch the floor, both have questions about ability to play defense. But Monti has the chance to bulk up, Jimmer will not get taller.

Monti creates a mismatch, Jimmer will probably be overmatched.
