Food for thought: why didn't KOC trade up to 6 with Golden State?

The Warriors wanted Udoh but he would have certainly been there at 9. KOC says he tried his darndest to trade up but I have a hard time believing that knowing GS would probably swap spots for very little. I'm not a huge Monroe fan, but like him better than Hayward, and he was 99% sure to be there as Sacramento publicly said they were taking Cousins at 5.

It doesn't add up how KOC could fail to swap spots with GS unless he valued Hayward higher than Monroe.

What did the Jazz have to entice Golden State into swapping picks?

A future 1st would have done it, as I said Golden State new Udoh would be there at 9, and would be cheaper as well. It would be a completely free gift for them.

A future 1st? I question KOC a lot, but I have to think that he used the Memphis pick in trade offers and maybe a protected 2012 pick. Even inept front offices wouldn't trade down to 9 since that was probably the worst spot in the draft. How would Golden State "now" that Udoh would be there when Detroit was picking behind them and needing a big man? They took their man and didn't look back.

What is this nonsense? You and I both know that Jazzfanz posters know LOADS more than KOC, Sloan, the coaches, the scouts, and the annalists. I have a feeling that the Miller's are conspiring to LOSE money with the Jazz. It's all starting to come together...

Exactly.
Either Monore wasn't a lot higher on their board than Hayward or GS wanted too much.

WE can agree/disagree with the selection, but clearly JOC choose the BPA on the Jazz' draft board and didn't go for position of greatest need.

Personally, I wanted Udoh. I think he could have given the Jazz some defense and shot-blocking,. But I understand the reasoning. When Okur comes back, that gives us 6 very good shooters on the team (Deron, Matthews, Millsap, CJ, Hayward and Okur). Five of those guys have 3-pt range and Millsap has developed an excellent mid-range game. If Hayward has decent ball-handling skills (he was originally a PG, IINM, before his growth spurt), then he could create some real mismatches and take some pressure off Deron.

I'm not sure where KOC is going to find a tough, defensive-minded 4/5, but that's the only real need. Someone who is big enough to play center and can slide over to PF behind Millsap.

its a question of weather Detroit would have taken Udoh... and they would not have... I don't think. They probably would have taken Aldrich or Aminu... maybe LA would have taken Udoh if the Pistons took Aminu... but Udoh i believe was only very high on GS's board... I think the Jazz wanted him second most... but we would have assuredly rather had Monroe.

I had a lot of concerns with Monroe. He really looks soft. I also don't think GS wanted to lose out possibly on Udoh. So this all might be a non issue. Now if we were somehow able to get into the top 5 and take Cousins then it wouldn't have been. The Kings took him at 5, right?

There was no one at 6 that was worth trading up for. We got as good a prospect as anyone at 6. If we could get into the top 3-5 and grab Couzins, then yes, it's worth trading up. But at 6, elite prospects were gone. No point of trading up to take a player who is not any better as the guy we got at 9.

Not a snowball's chance in Houston this would have done it. No GM is that stupid

What would be stupid is to give up #9 and a first rounder next year for #6 this year. With Cousins gone, you are switching two next level crap shots and losing an asset in the process. That's not very smart.

My guess is it wasn't enough for those teams. If it was don't you think at least one trade up in the lottery would have happened if the cost was only a mid 1st round pick next year? The closest team in the draft order was NO trading Aldrich away to save money Aldrich's contract & MoPete to the OKC for cap relief. I think that's what those teams wanted and the Jazz just didn't want to give up the last little bit of cap space they have to guarantee they lose their own guys (Boozer & Matthews, Fes etc)

This...Totally agree.
But then again, why not make a thread bashing KOC whenever you can make something up?

In what way would that be stupid? Had they known Udoh would still be available at 9, the choice is this: A) Draft Udoh; and B) Draft Udoh AND get an extra first-round draft pick out of the deal. I ask again: Given the above stated circumstance, in what conceivable way would that be stupid?

For the record, the Pistons weren't as high on Udoh as Golden State. It's almost certain that the Pistons would have taken Ed Davis at 7 - not Udoh - if Monroe wasn't available. And the Clippers wanted Aminu. So yes, Udoh still would have been there at 9.

Does anyone really think that Udoh or Monroe really will be good players in this league? Neither exactly impressed me. Monroe might be as good as Channing Frye someday. While Udoh reminds me of Anthony Randolf who's already with the Warriors. Neither is a can't miss prospect. If the Jazz were to trade it up would have been for a top 5 pick. After that, the difference between 6-15 wasn't that different.

I'm not at all angry at KOC for not trading up for Udoh or Monroe.

I think Udoh is the very definition of bust. Monroe reminds me a lot of a slightly slower Chris Webber with his body frame, passing, tendency to like to face the basket, finesse style, his touch around the basket, and his mid-range shooting. I don't know if he's gonna make it or not, and lord knows we don't need another softie on the team, but I would have liked to pick him ahead of who we did.
