Trump calls for elimination of tariffs, end to US being world's 'piggy bank'

"Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!," the President tweeted on Saturday.

The photo attached to this post is epic. Sums it all up.

It's like he never grew up. He acts like a six year old. Yet his followers will somehow see this behavior as strength. Our President is nothing but the Troll in Chief, driving the country off a cliff while all his followers, all trolls themselves, cheer him on. How stupid is that? Act like a troll, and call it your foreign policy. We're hitting rock bottom here, but if I so much as point that out, I'm just a whining Left wingnut....

Democrats Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Sen. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) also posted their opposition to Trump on Twitter. “Are we executing Putin’s diplomatic and national security strategy or AMERICA’s diplomatic and national security strategy? After the last few days, it’s hard to tell,” Schumer wrote.

What war friendly McCain has to say means close to nothing to me.

It’s a republican senator speaking out against his own republican president to the world leaders.

Not something you see every day.

That may mean nothing to you. The president taking a major **** on our allies might mean nothing to you. Who actually goes to these things may mean nothing to you.

But it means a hell of a lot to others.

America, the shining city on a hill, has a problem. And putin is using him to sow dysfunction in the West.

Not good.

Well, at least we’re almost to the halfway point of *******’s presidency.

The problem is, who the hell are the Dems gonna shuffle to the front of the line?

Here is what Trudeau said that set off the man-child's tamper tantrum. And btw, this piece is written by a Center-Right columnist for the Washington Post, Jennifer Rubin. Video of Trudeau's comments at link:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...fter-the-g-7-summit-be-afraid-be-very-afraid/

"He no doubt was reacting to the public tongue-lashing from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who told the press, “I highlighted directly to the president that Canadians did not take it lightly that the United States has moved forward with significant tariffs on our steel and aluminum industry.” Trudeau continued by declaring that the Trump administration’s decision to invoke “national security” to justify tariffs was “insulting” given Canada’s alliance with the United States in multiple wars. As Trudeau put it, “Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around.” Trump can never tolerate criticism, let alone such public and direct criticism, so he accused Trudeau of making “false statements” and reneged on the decision to sign the joint communique."

So how does Trump respond? Like so: "“PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, ‘US Tariffs were kind of insulting’ and he ‘will not be pushed around,’” Trump tweeted. “Very dishonest & weak.”

In other words, he responded like the bully he is. He really only respects bullies and fellow authoritarians. Remember the time he called Philippines president Duterte and told him he was doing a "great job" with the drug problem there, knowing that "great job" included thousands of extra-legal killings? Yeah, meek and mild don't cut it with our meanspirited Bully in Chief. I don't know how anyone can respect this infantile clown. But of course his followers will cheer on this show of "strength". Kick our friends in the teeth is what turns his followers on. Sad.

Here was the French response:

"Mr Macron's office said France and other EU countries would maintain their support for the final G7 communique.

"Let's be serious and worthy of our people. We make commitments and keep to them," a statement from the French presidency quoted by AFP news agency said.

"International co-operation cannot be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks," it added."

Gee, ya think? Seems to me it's our President who does most of the whining nowadays. But, emotionally, he's a six year old....

@JustTheTip

I’m curious what you think about this as Trump specifically referred to farming tariffs. I’m not sure if it only has to do with dairy as he specifically mentioned that...

From what I gather, Canada’s tariffs on American dairy was addressed in TPP... the same TPP trump backed out of.

So just like the Iran deal, Trump trashes it without actually learning anything about it and is now going to bitch about Iran’s acceleration in nuclear proliferation.

Maybe if the dumbass actually read anything other than watch Fox n Friends, he’d learn something about world affairs.

I’m genuinely interested in people’s opinions on subsidizing dairy farmers. From what I gather, Canada instituted these tariffs as a result of the overwhelming subsidies America’s government gives to American dairy farmers. This allowed American farmers to flood Canada with cheap american milk, putting the welfare of Canadian farmers at risk.

American farmers are a small but very loud voting block. Big Ag might be the largest corporate welfare scheme there is in this country. For as much bitching as trump does against china’s manipulation of trade, America pulls a few tricks to flood markets with its own goods.

What I’m saying is we shouldn’t whine about tariffs. We benefit a lot from being able to flood consumption economies with our cheap government subsidized crap. Is trump necessarily all wrong in discussing tariffs? No. But he’s not working to solve anything either. He’s just whining and insulting others. It makes him appear as poorly informed (which he is) and impossible to work (which he is) with. Not exactly a winning combination.

IMO, what hurts american consumers the most aren’t tariffs. What hurts them the most is lack of universal health care, paid maternity and paternity leave, and too much wealth inequality. You can’t blame Canada, China, etc for our skimpy benefits and stagnant wages. And no tariff is gonna fix that.

One last thing, trump seems to project a lot. He was completely caught off guard at the G7 meeting as he tried to lie his way through interviews. Unlike America’s softball media and ignorant adoring Fox News addicts, the world leaders there weren’t buying his made up statistics and lies.

He saw himself as the awkward, weak, and unpopular outcast.

That’s why trump left early and being the big man that he is, trashed Trudeau safely on AF1, describing Trudeau exactly as trump sees himself, “weak, deceitful, impotent...”

Anyone ever see that movie about 30 years ago called Dutch? That kid in it, that’s Trump. A completely unlikeable baby. Only way dumber.

The best thing about Trump's presidency is that liberals are all for free trade now.

Thank goodness. Better for the gop to reap the consequences of a bad idea than us. No one wins in trade wars.

For me the best thing from Trump’s presidency is the revealing of the right.

We all knew that their concerns over deficits was superficial. Merely a way to obstruct President Obama.

We all knew Fox News was propaganda. Hannity has been exposed. Bigly

We all knew their loyalty to law enforcement was contingent on law enforcement incarcerating blacks, not on “law and order.” Now that one of their own is being investigated, they hate law enforcement.

We all knew the gop was the party of the rich and couldnt give a **** about the 99 percent. We see that clearly with how the only significant legislative achievement has been tax cuts for the rich (while health care costs continue to escalate and denying people with pre existing conditions is enabled again).

We all knew the right’s patriotism was nationalism. We see that now with how the 1st amendment is being trampled because some blacks decide to speak up.

We all knew that “family values” was code for being hateful towards gays and for keeping women in the House without any abortion rights. They can never again claim to be the party of family values now after supporting Trump.

We all knew whites claiming to be forgotten was less about losing factories and more about the perceived notion that minorities were gaining economically and socially.

We all knew Trump didn’t insult putin for a reason. Now we all know.

We all knew that MAGA was code for racism, misogyny, and authoritarianism. Now, it’s undeniable.

It's all just so dumb. Whatever your thoughts are on free trade, are Canadian tarriffs on milk products really worth alienating our most important allies over?

I suppose it's actually far more likely that Trump doesn't really care all that much about dairy products, it was probably just something he heard recently and used that as a jumping off point to lay into Trudeau, from the safety of his iPhone of course.

I am actually quite curious to see what the far left Berner brigade makes of all this. I'm sure Sanders as president would have been less friendly to free trade than any president we've had in a long time, but I doubt he would have gone about it in as bumbling a fashion as Trump has.

Trump’s always in a pissing contest with other leaders. The problem is, it’s splattering all over the rest of us.

Seems like Josh Bivens and his Economic Policy Institute (they're liberal) are pretty happy about Trump's trade policies. Most anti-free-trade liberals have been mostly silent about the issue.

It is a bit complicated of course. For example, the TPP was not wholly endorsed by left or right thinkers. There are very few trade restrictions between the signatories as is, and the main purpose of the agreement was to give greater access to US markets in return for exporting the US patent system to those countries. So basically protectionism for IP-based sectors, like pharma and silicon valley. Many on the left prefer protectionist policies aimed at blue collar workers, just as Trump is doing, instead of protecting the ultra-rich thru the oft-maligned patent system.

Very good question.

I’d like to add that most democrats have advocated for retraining displaced workers. But “retraining” is a bad idea among those still dreaming about well paying coal jobs.

Hillary campaigned for this in coal country and they complained that she wanted to “re-educate them.” Along came Trump who brought up memories of the 1950s, bashed the EPA, and said obama, and they gave him a standing ovation.

At some point stupid people need to be blamed for their stupid choices.

Retraining is a silly idea anyway. Not easy to train a 50 year old coal worker to compete with teenagers in the software sector.
