Dallas Star-Telegram: Hood's last-second 3-pointer ruins furious Mavs' rally in Utah

Utah Jazz guard Rodney Hood (5) shoots the game winning shot as Dallas Mavericks guard Seth Curry (30) defend while his teammates look on in ...

Full Story...

Jazz point guard George Hill missed his eighth consecutive game with a sprained big left toe, but coach Quin Snyder said Hill is walking, shooting off his toes and doing toe raises.

“Frankly, he hasn’t been able to do (that),” Snyder said. “I feel like he’s turned a corner, being able to do a little bit more.

“Now the biggest thing, too, is once he’s able to start doing things more aggressively and moving, he’s going to have to start and stop. It’s different than when he was coming back from his thumb. His feet, your lower body, and particularly your big toe, I don’t know when you’re not using it.”

Sounds like he'll miss a few more games.

His balance isn't quite there yet.

There are some positives to take out of this:

1. His thumb will be fully healed
2. I think Shelvin will be better and be accustomed to his backup role in the rotation, just with less minutes
3. It gives Dante more time for development, though I think he will fall behind Shelvin in the rotation once Hill comes back
4. It gives other guys more minutes as we move forward with Favors healing and Burks coming back next month.
5. Barring more injuries, this is going to make the Jazz even stronger come playoff time.

I think that the biggest positive to come out of him missing time is that Dante is starting to look more confident out there, and we are winning games with him starting. That's got to be great for the kid.

Crazy part is I truly feel the Jazz would have likely won the games against Memphis, Denver, Charlotte, Chicago and Miami. That would be 22-5.

Yeah I know, what ifs.

My point os I'm thrilled with 17-10 but this team, healthy, is better than that. Clips and Rockets better start looking over their shoulders.

As well as Shelvin Mack is playing right now ,a confident Dante will be hard pressed to not give minutes to.I think the confidence will show defensively 1st where all the touch fouls start looking like hard nosed defense instead.

Yeah and the refs start calling things fairly with Dante. It's so obvious that the other teams are intentionally being very aggressive with him physically and the refs aren't calling it. Since Dante is a reserve anyway and they are calling all these touch fouls against him, I think he ought to start getting very physical and when people hammer him, he returns the favor.

Dante and shelvin were both the beneficiaries of hill being out no doubt. I agree with others that observed dante is not back physically from his rookie year. It will take months if not until next season. So hill coming back will impact dantes progress but it is well worth it for jazz (near term of course) but also to let Dante come along at reasonable pace so as to not overburden him and no need. Mack has matured to provide this years back up needs. This does make the player investment long term plan hard though.

That would put us in 2nd. Crazy to think about.

Anyone else feel like Shelvin Mack is Snyder's security blanket? Also I believe Shelvin can't get it done against the best competition. Dante might be able to. So in my mind you need to find a way to build up Dante so you have the best chance to win in the playoffs.

To be honest, I think Mack is one of the better backup PGs in the league. We aren't going to be giving up much with him against other teams' benches. Sure he won't get it done against top competition, but that's why we have Hill. Realistically,no team is supposed to have backups that can hold up against top competition anyways. I get that Dante might be able to in the future, but we don't need him to do that this season. It's perhaps slightly shortsighted, but we are trying to win now instead of developing players.

It's a tight line that's hard to walk though.

Dante doesn't need to play to develop a ******* shot. He doesn't need to play in a game to be able to go 5 minutes without looking like a 40-yr old rec league player sucking wind.

Dante needs to go early to the gym and stay late shooting, He needs to run a few miles every day. He just looks like he has no fire. In that respect, he reminds me of Krissy Humphries. Ton of talent, just no heart. Jazz may have done Exum a disservice by handing him the starting job just because ANYONE was better than Burke.

I think this is an unfair evaluation. I think Dante is just a late-bloomer. Some guys mature earlier and he definitely is not fully matured yet -- just look at his acne. I think back when I grew up and there were guys that were fully matured in their teens like a guy I didn't know at the time who went from high school to play for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. I later got to know him personally and played basketball with him -- he was also a basketball phenom in high school. What a difference once everyone else grew up. He was still good but no longer a man among boys. I think it's the same with Dante. Give him a little time to mature and I think his talent will bloom. Time will tell.

I keep mentioning it, but it's just weird how winded Dante gets. He's not visibly out of shape, and he plays quite a bit, and I'm assuming he runs quite a bit during practices. So why does he so often look like he just got done running a 400M sprint? Maybe he needs nasal surgery.
