A North Dakota county has issued a warrant for the arrest of Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, who is accused of spray-painting construction equipment during a protest against the Dakota Access pipeline.

Stein was charged Wednesday in Morton County with misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

A spokeswoman for Stein said Tuesday that activists invited her to leave a message at the protest site, and Stein sprayed "I approve this message" in red paint on the blade of a bulldozer.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is trying to stop construction of a section of the pipeline that tribal leaders say would violate sacred and culturally sensitive grounds and possibly pollute water.

I voted for Jill Stein last election and plan to do so again. While I get that this is not on Trump/Clinton corruption levels, I'm not thrilled that my candidate wasn't smart enough to not tag a bulldozer. Is obeying the law too much to ask of a presidential candidate?

Dunno I think that's the kind of thing the Geens have to do to stay relevant in this political climate...

Also it's not like she is doing it viciously.. it's just a good old fashion protest.

I do think the people should protest more against these big corporations (peacefully) if anything ...

I certainly have nothing against peaceful protest. And this particular situation is disturbing and not receiving enough media coverage. I'm just not a fan of vandalism.

If she was a real greenie she would have use a paintbrush made of hemp and paint mixed from her own urine instead of spray paint, WTF Jill aerosols?

True...

<Jill in front of the judge> "But your honour, I did use a re-washable, re-useable, and 100% re-cyclable paint. Surely I should get a credit for doing that!!!".

So this story should be HUGE?

I'd have to think about that. I'm not trying to rate it. But, at least for the people involved, the largest gathering of Native Americans in one place, for one purpose, in a hundred years, is bound to seem like a big deal to those folks. I've seen it covered on the nightly news, but not to much of a degree.

"Clyde Bellecourt is one of the founders of the American Indian Movement, a significant civil rights group in the 1960s and 70s. In all his days fighting for Native American rights, he says he has never seen anything like the camps. "I am 80 years old," he said. "I've been jailed, I've been shot. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. This is what I fought for."

I remember Bellecourt from back in the day. And the events that led to Leonard Peletier being put in prison for the murder of FBI agents that he likely did not commit. Although that is unrelated to the present situation. But, history is written from the point of view of the victors, not the vanquished. And since these are the vanquished, I guess stories like this tend to stay on the back burner. At the same time, since this pipeline has a connection to fracking, this gathering of Native Americans might fit into that thread as well.....

I wasn't aware that protection of your ancestor's burial grounds was in the bill of rights. And how long should Native American's have special status? IMO at some point they should just become Americans.

They are Americans. They are also tribal people's with thousands of years of cultural identity. They've been here for over 13,000 years and wish to maintain their cultural identity. The federal government even recognizes a degree of sovereignty for those tribes it "recognizes". We tried things like boarding schools where native children were beaten senseless if they spoke their native tongue. They still insisted on maintaining their cultural identity. May there never come a point where they "just become Americans". There are still millions of acres of tribal lands throughout the United States. May that never change. Not sure why anyone would urge cultural obliteration. Nobody has that right.

Actually, yes, there are laws governing Native American graves and the cultural items buried there, as well as the human remains:
