Senator Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, the longest-serving Senate Republican, plans to announce on Tuesday he will retire at the end of the year, rebuffing the pleas of President Trump to seek an eighth term and paving the way for Mitt Romney to run for the seat.

Mr. Hatch intends to announce his decision Tuesday afternoon via a video announcement, according to two Republican officials briefed on the plans.

Mr. Hatch, 83, was under heavy pressure from Mr. Trump to seek re-election and block Mr. Romney, who has been harshly critical of the president. But Mr. Hatch, who emerged as one of the president’s most avid loyalists in the Senate, decided to retire after discussing the matter with his family over the holidays. The veteran senator was also facing harsh poll numbers in Utah, where 75 percent of voters indicated in a survey last fall that they did not want him to run again.

This will piss the President off lol.

Romney will most likely win this seat I think.

It's about time. Glad he made the responsible choice.

Agreed, on both counts.

I will be happy to have him as a senator, especially since I remember this speech:

I hope mitt Romney uses this as an opportunity to
Restore some Sanity in the gop and serve his constituents well rather than take the Jeff Flake approach of saying mean things about Dump and then going along with whatever Dump wants.

If mitt wants to gear for a future presidential run, he could probably do well as working as a moderate republican and stand up to Dump. Many moderates have been turned off by Dump. They have no one to vote for.

Otherwise, moderate republican voters will be voting blue. which, I’d have no problem with. With the GOP’s failure to reform health care, latest tax scam, and current foreign policy blunders, the gop has clearly run out of usefulness for the 99 percent.

Now trump is comparing his **** to a nuclear weapons button. Apparently he’s moved on from Rubio’s hands and wants to compare cocks with Kim Jong Un.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This was one of the better political speeches in my lifetime. A lot of people thought it was petty, but I loved how he went against toting the party like the typical republican is expected to do.
