Hayward should have covered Kobe

Someone please explain this to me. Hayward in the game last April gave Kobe a lot trouble defensively. Why then wouldn't you try Hayward on Kobe again? I know I know Raja is a great defender----really? 40 points? Hayward could not have done worse and who knows based on last years performance might have again been effective against Kobe.

Hayward to date this season has been our worst defensive wing. Why in the hell would you want him guarding the best player in the league?

I was super dissapointed in the substitutions last night. But putting Hayward on Kobe was not the answer.

Hayward sucked last night.

I think we should have benched Jefferson in favor of Kanter and Favors.

I think we should have also given Tinsley burn after Harris proved that he had zoned out and was down with letting Fisher own him and after watson jacked up his knee. If not Tinsley then maybe Burks.

In order to beat the lakers you need a point that can destroy Fish. For whatever reason, Harris doesn't use the pick and roll and blow past fish. So strange. Since virtually every point guard we've had has always destroyed Fish and the Lakers with the PandR. Stockton, Arroyo/Lopez, Dwill, and Earl. It's weird to me why Harris is sucking so bad against Fish when I would think blowing past that slow vet should be an ideal matchup...

I feel like 5 years down the road people will still be referencing that one time Hayward played kind of good defense on Kobe.

When Kobe goes off like that, there's not much you can do...

Personally, I think our defense was pretty darn good last night. It wasn't like World Peace or Gasol were going off.

What we needed was something... Anything... Out of a few of our key players. Instead, Hayward, Harris, and Jefferson gave us nothing.

The problem last night wasn't the defense. But the rebounding and offense (especially the offense when they went into a zone. That zone killed us)

Raja continues to play well on defense and be our best defensive wing. It was simple matter of substituting for defense of offense.

I agree with all of this....except you spelled "Howard" wrong, and he wasn't on the team last year.

But good post, thanks.

IMO Raja did his job, which is to make Kobe work hard for his points. RB/Kobe is an odd relationship also in that Kobe really looks forward to "playing Raja". I thought Bryant would have made a lot more easy buckets if he wasn't busy trying to beat Bell one on one. Not that he never used a screen all game or anything, but IMO Bryant spent too much time in a close game making it about one matchup.

Maybe Gordon could have done better but I doubt it. Bell played his butt off.

This. I read that Kobe shot 7 of 17 against Raja. Go back and look at Kobe's final shot in regulation that could've won the game at the buzzer. Raja with a tiny poke at the ball as Kobe went up for his shot, completely threw his shot off and he didn't even catch rim.

When CJ and Howard guarded Kobe in the 2nd-qtr, they were getting hung up on screens and Kobe was getting wide-open looks from 10-15 feet. Our bigs did a poor job showing as well, but Raja doesn't get caught up in screens as easily (he got hung up a few times but generally he tries to fight over them). Raja kept Kobe between him and the basket, and forced him to make jumpshots with a hand in his face. Of course Kobe made alot of them but that's all you can do. Nobody's going to shut him down (including the great Gordon Hayward).

(this doesn't mean I'm advocating Raja get more minutes - just that he did as good a job defending Kobe as anyone on the Jazz)

Every jazz game Kobe remarks positively about Hayward.

Also I think Kobe has a tough time shooting over a 6'8 guy. Not to mention Hayward never goes for the pump fakes unlike AK did.

You are not counting the shot attempts he was fouled on and missed.
The Jazz defensive scheme worked good, holding the Lakers to 43% shooting, and under 90 points in the first 48 minutes.

It kind of cracks me up how difficult it is for some NBA teams to deal with a zone defense. You would think they would be able to break that zone down and force them back to man to man fairly easily.

With the exception of Millsap and Watson, the whole team played pretty poorly. To lose by three in OT versus the Lakers when only two players played well is a victory and a good sign for the future.

Stop living in last April. It is new season, Jazz are not out of playoffs yet and so far Hayward sucks. He could not guard anybody including rookie like Leonard so far, so you think it would be nice to shatter his shaken confidence even more by letting Kobe destroy him?

Hayward doesnt suck, you just try to justify yourself to say AK should be back.
The truth is Hayward isnt shooting well, but still he is taking responsibility in the last mins even in the games he looked pretty bad. Its true that he has problem guarding strong players at 3, thats why i have been screaming for all the off season that he should play at 2.
