Isaah Thomas Calls Malone the Weakest Link

Says Malone was such a horrible FT shooter, and that's why we never won a championship. Isaah is a career 75.9%, while Malone is 74.2% HUH!?

Thomas is so stupid. I can't even stand to hear him talk. Its amazing he was as good as he was.

Its a dumb way to word it the way he does. How can he be the weak link if the biggest reason why the Jazz were really good was because of him?

Mail's career total includes his rookie year where he shot close to 50% from the foul line so subtract his rookie year and his FT percentage goes up.

Hilarious. Isiah said Malone was the weak link due to poor free throw %. Malone was a career 74% FT shooter and Isiah was a 76% career FT shooter. Isiah was the weak link that caused the CBA to disband. Isiah was a weak link for the Knicks. Isiah was the weak link and was fired from FIU. Isiah's brain is his weakest link. Isiah, you are the weakest link. Goodbye.

No foul there. Obviously going for the ball. Isaiah's big head got in the way.

I think Thomas' point is that Malone missed clutch free throws in the playoffs and in the finals. His wording was maybe not correct or he might have been over exaggerating for effect. PLus I think he does have a grudge against the Mailman. Malone to his credit became a solid free throw shooter in his career and was certainly not a weak link at all, but the two missed ones against the Bulls are a big blemish.

Yea I am sure that Dick Bavetta or having many marginal NBA teammates had nothing to do with it. If Malone wasn't on the team the Jazz would have been a playoff fringe team. Take Stockton of too and the Jazz would have been lottery bound every year.

Teams win championships and not players but Isaiah isn't the smartest cookie in the world.

To bad we do not have clutch shooting stat data like we have now. I would be interested to see what FT% Malone shot in last 3 min of the close games in playoffs. We all certainly remember 1997 Finals game 1 and 1996 WCF game 7 vs Seattle where he did choke at the line down the stretch... so maybe Isiah has some point.

What was Malone's playoff FT% and what was his finals FT%? I remember feeling like his missed FTs made the difference in a few games. That was the emotional response of teenage Gameface after the Jazz lost in the finals, so it could be completely removed from reality.

You can't blame the refs. The best players on your team have to step up. What about that embarrassing 54 points we put up in a game in the Finals? Utah had chances to win both of those series. Unfortunately, it came down to a historic shot (though we still had a possession to win the game or send it to OT.) Marginal teammates? sure. Had that Rony Seikley trade gone through or maybe if that other proposed trade that included Derrek Coleman went through we could have had a powerhouse of a team. But you can't blame the refs for the Jazz's meltdown in Game 6. Was there questionable plays? sure. But had Malone hit a layup at the end we may have remembered that series completely differently.

The NBA was different you needed 2 stars. Malone and Stockton utilized the rules of the time and were amazing at putting up wins year after year. The Jazz should have won in 98. Had a decent shot in 97. But you can't blame the refs because Malone was notorious for choking FTs when it counted in the playoffs (and to a lesser extent Stockton too. his post season numbers are FAR off his regular season averages.)

Came here hoping for some Isaiah vs Mike.
Can't say I'm disappointed. MWP would be proud!

I don't know if you watch much basketball but yes refs do determine the outcome of some games. Even Stockton said that a couple bad calls can be the difference. When two mistakes -taking away a 3p shot and then allowing a basket (Harper) that was painfully obvious a shot clock violation is not corrected, how can you say it didn't affect the outcome. Imagine if the Jazz had been give those 5 pts, then there would be no last second shot. The Jazz most likely would have kept the ball in Hornacek or Stockton's hands. We will never know. Did you know that Dick Bavetta apologized to S&M the next year for blowing the calls. Why do you think the league now reviews questionable calls at the end of games (i know it wasn't this series but later when the Mavs got screwed - changes were made)?

1972 Olympics - Poster child for how incompetent refs can change the outcome

Sactown, Dallas, Portland and the Jazz would tell you differently. Throw in Indy and how they got screwed in the Eastern conference finals against MJ.

Malone numbers were down in the playoffs because teams were better able to double and triple team him because they knew his inferior teammates would not step up (see David Benoit). Same with Stockton, the Bulls adjusted and put Pippen on him which cause trouble for stockton. If 1997 the Jazz sat around for 10 days before playing the Bulls so they rusty when the series started. The 54 point blow out was just that a horrible game but the Jazz came back and won the next game. Of course they had their chances but when you have to overcome a huge disparity of calls it makes it very difficult.
