Jazz having James Johnson Workout

Free agent forward James Johnson will attend workouts for the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks and Utah Jazz and is hoping to leave teams impressed, league sources told RealGM.

Ever since Johnson was drafted 16th in the 2009 NBA draft, teams have envisioned him as an athletic forward at 6-foot-9, but he’s yet to put together a breakout season in four years.

Johnson’s ability to perform in workout settings could have one team intrigued enough to give him an opportunity, though.

Johnson played a complete season with the Chicago Bulls in 2009-10, but he was traded to the Toronto Raptors the next year and averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 2011-12. Johnson, 26, spent last season as mostly a reserve for the Sacramento Kings.

He gets lots of blocks for his position.

Is he a sf or pf?

Dude has a natural athletic ability and talent - is a bit like poor man's AK, can do everything and at one point I thought he will be the next 5X5 guy ( remember him abusing Hayward in Utah when Raptors won in double overtime where he had like 6 blocks in that game). But I think he did have a bit of a pot problem back in Toronto, not sure he got his head straight since then.

Interesting that the Spurs and their branch teams (Atlanta & Utah) are in the mix for him. Wonder what they see. He's never been able to make shots effectively, he turns the ball over too much, & he's a below-average rebounder. Guess he can be a tough defensive presence and insurance for when Evans lack of strength makes him unplayable.

We have

Burke
Burks
Hayward
Favors
Kanter

Lucas
Rush
Jefferson
Evans
Biedrens

Gobert
Clark
Marvin Williams
McNeal**

So that is 13 players with guaranteed contracts and 1 unguaranteed deal.

Johnson would be the 15th player under contract.

That's right! So if we do sign Johnson do you think we would sign McNeal or keep a spot open for injury insurance.

We need another PF, unless you think Evans can back up Favors at 20 minutes a night. I don't know if Johnson is the answer, but he definitely helps fill a need.

I have more faith in Evans than Johnson.

Once Jeremy get beat in the post over and over and over again you'll change your mind. I think a healthy combination of both players would work tho.

If Favors has the same fouling issues this year the backup PF will be playing 25+ min.

The only upside is it drives the tank.

Typical home player favoring I guess?
Seriously, Johnson is way more complete/universal than Evans. Good passer, tough defender, can make occasional 3 ( have you seen Evans doing anything besides dunks and some blocks?). Dude even hit game winning buzzer beater 3 for Sacramento last year:).
He would be better then Carroll/M.Williams/J.Howard or other wing players we had as long as he is serious about playing and not wasting his talent smoking pot with Beasley and other potheads.

Here is a kid from a good family and wouldn't mind living in Utah at all. He from Cheyenne Wyoming. Since im close to the Wyoming border I followed him closely from high school and at wake forest. Kid just need a chance and playing time

I don't care what his family is like. If he can play he deserves a spot.
