Maravich

I saw the closed thread and wanted to post my opinion about Maravich. I don't know how many of you saw him in college, but I hated him then. His father was the coach and he shot the ball practically on every possession no matter how many guys were guarding him. It was disgusting and it was also why he scored so many points. He was, at least in college, the biggest chucker of all time without a doubt. I never saw much of him in the pros though, so I'm sure his game was modified after that. No doubt he had some great offensive skills but he always sucked on defense and wasn't very athletic.

He was style over substance.

Maravich was extremely talented offensively, so much so, that Red Aurback had nothing but good things to say about him! However, he was so fundamentally unsound on defense that he was almost considered a liability while he was on the court! That being said, had he played in TODAY'S NBA while in his prime, he would have led the league in scoring 8-10 years in a row....at around 40 points a game! When he played they did NOT have the 3 point line, they did not call a foul when someone "blew" on you, they allowed hand checking back in his day and he still found a way to score close to 30 points a game, while shooting 45% from the field and 80% from the free throw line! I suspect in his prime and coached by Popovich and on the Spurs during the Duncan era....they would have won 70 games a year and 5 straight championships! That's my story and I'm sticking with it!
