I am kind of curious of how the military men and women are protected that are on the front lines. It just seems to me that the images I see they are still very exposed. It seems that even Swat members are more protected. Do they have bullet proof vests? Protection on the upper legs and thighs? It seems like in this day and age our military should almost be wearing iron man suits.
 
I think the military can be a valid career choice and a good way for a young man to start his life out right. I understand they offer attractive signing bonuses. Military personnel also enjoy the love and respect of the community. They get military discounts at many business. It can be a good option for someone between the ages of 18-35 who is looking to get a leg up on life.

Having a couple of close friends who have served in the Marine Corps during operation Iraqi Freedom, I asked them once about the protective gear they would wear compared to the gear we wear. They said that they were provided with more, but often times due to the heat it was more comfortable for them to downgear a little bit. I.E. ceramic plates are the only thing that can stop rifle rounds and these are quite heavy in a vest. I was told you can really only wear the plates over your heart and lung areas and it was bulky enough that it hindered combat. As far as everything else goes, I read in Generation Kill that often-times, especially at the beginning of the war, the soldiers were sent into combat under-equipped.

I would hope they atleast have bullet proof vest. I have been watching the Pacific and other world war 2 movies and it seems really only their guns and vehicles have really changed. Maybe the military is too focused on technology for killing others but not protecting our guys. Maybe a case of too much offense and the defense needs to be addressed.
 
Bullet proof vests only work against handguns. Most wars are fought with rifles so the vest would only serve to incumber the soldier.

Or you really are that stupid.
 
Agility counts for something in combat. You don't want a soldier so weighed down he's just a big target for whatever the enemy wants to throw at him.

Throughout history the advantage in war has flip-flopped between offense and defense. You are advocating defensive tactics in an overwhelmingly offense-favored environment.
 
The problem with being in the military is that you are a guinea pig. I would shoot somebody if they tried to make me use weapons with Depleted Uranium munitions.

If I were to be stupid (allegedly) and I was calling Beantown out about being stupid. That's a coincidence, not irony.

It would be ironic (for the sake of argument) if I called Beantown stupid, and he responds with a learned lecture trying to evaluate the concept of stupid.

Let's see if you can find the other use of irony in this thread.
 
I would suggest anyone who can't afford college or doesn't want to leave school with a ton of student loans join the reserves. You get money for college and a pretty cool part time job.
 
I suspect that the military will eventually have full body suits not unlike what you see in movies like GI Joe or Ironman. I've also seen where they are developing a material that refracts light essentially making you invisible.

That being said, unmanned war, I think, is the ultimate trend. Unmanned drones and robotic tanks along with laser guided missles will be the future.
