We are moving to Moreno Valley CA. Got a job with an auto-parts distributor there and will be moving within the next few weeks. Any suggestions for the general area, as in nice places to live, good schools or places and bad schools to avoid? We have been considering Redlands and the area around Valley View High School initially. We are going there sometime in the next week for a househunting trip.

We will have one kid moving with us and she is just entering high school. She loves singing and choir and wants to be a veterinarian so we are looking for a school with a good overall reputation and decent programs in sciences and music. I am not afraid of commutes so that is not really an issue (the warehouse is more on the west side of Moreno Valley). So, anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

No advice but wishing you the best.

Congrats on the new job! I know absolutely nothing about that area though.

Thank you.

I had a great experience with Ebay and moving to Germany, then returned to the US to work for one of the most dysfunctional companies I have ever seen, from the top down. Truly one of the worst experiences in my life. I left them in July to get away from the poisonous atmosphere and a spineless boss, and have been looking ever since. With this move I get reunited with one of my mentors and best bosses I have had and a solid company (I have been a part of 4 layoffs in my career, gotta love recessions), so I am excited about that. But after so many years in great places like Layton/Clearfield area and Reno NV where we rarely if ever even locked our doors I want to get some info about this new area. I lived in Loma Linda briefly during my cancer treatment but that is now almost 20 years ago, so hoping to get some more current knowledge on the area.

We have a vacation house 45 minutes east in Palm Springs. MV is hot and smog is bad. Very suburban. For So Cal, home prices are reasonable. I don't know the area well, but there are some nice neighborhoods. Good luck.

I like Yucaipa/Oak Glen. Oak Glen is pretty small and unaffordable but that's one of the better places to visit in the area so being close to it is a good call. Yucaipa has good housing stock though. Definitely take a look there when you go.

You sound like one of the most exciting people on the planet! 4 layoffs an you are still happy an positive? I do not know how anyone can not respect the heck out of that.

And get quotes....not a pricing menu, not an estimate....get quotes and only quotes.

Yep. And one thing I did was, I noticed how the contract said I only have to pay for the hours worked. I think it was $150/hour and the quote was for six hours. At about the three hour mark, I told the guys, if they could get it done in five hours, it would save me $150, and I'd toss them half of that, or $25 each. They got it done in five hours.

I am not afraid of commutes

famous last words.

Seriously, though, if you don't mind commutes, then you should try to get out of that valley and into smaller areas to the east. I'm not sure how this fits the rest of your criteria, but I know I'd much rather live out there. Idyllwild looks like a nice place to be.

Hire a moving company.

Check out movingscam.com for more information on moving.

We have moved a few times, and have used U-pack (ABF), North American, United, and Broadway Express (my favorite). When my employer pays for the move, I use full service, when the give me a flat rate moving allowance, I used Broadway and pocket the difference...

Broadway Express brings a semi trailer, and you reserve the space you need. You pay your own movers to load (we use the mover service through U-haul and have had good success). We have saved about $5k compared to other quotes by using Broadway. On our last move in February, we reserved the whole truck (53') and had enough room to add a 4Runner to the trailer. We saved about $6500 compared to full-service and a separate car shipper (we packed our own boxes). We moved to Cali using Broadway Express and it was great. Moovers is also highly recommended, but I haven't used them.

Thanks for the advice. Luckily I have a full relocation package with a lump sum plus movers that come and pack everything for us, will store it for up to 30 days, and unload and unpack in our new place, so that piece is covered. In fact I am leaving tomorrow for a house hunting trip on the company dime. Will be there from tomorrow to Sunday.
