Not sure what this means for his future with the Jazz, but I really wanted to see if he could be a back-up point guard for us. We've desperately needed one since Howard Eisley left.

It probably means similar fate to Tomic. We will never see him in Jazz uniform.

Called it a while back. He will never be in a jazz uni.

This guy is still young and I personally don't think that theirs anything wrong with him staying overseas for a few years. IN 3 years....Jazz will not a back up pg and he will be perfect.

I don't think he wanted to be a backup, and not sure the Jazz wanted to buyout the contract for a backup.
Now it seems even less likely, but I look forward to the "Jazz buying out Neto contract, he will be here next year" threads every year for a while.

I think the Jazz had every intention of bringing him over to back up Burke. Then they drafted Exum and Neto went out the window. That sucks for Neto because it seemed like he really wanted to be in the NBA.

Fwiw, he's going to Murcia, a similar caliber team more or less. He probably will have similar playing time, around 25-30 mins.

He's still 22 so we could always bring him whenever we want and he can easily serve as a backup PG. But for now, he doesn't seem improving his game much so he is doing the right thing staying in ACB. He will continue to start and play against good players and that also makes the Jazz look smart since they really don't need to risk anything by bringing him right away. This is exactly how the "draft and stash" should be done so everything seems perfect to me.

It seems like they want to roll with Exum and Burke for now. Neto is young and needs the experience. If he improves, it's likely that they buy him out in two years and bring him over then. I was hoping they'd just develop him themselves, but they'd rather have him compete in Europe instead. It sucks, because there's a chance he never comes over. . . but if he's not ready, then he's not ready. I personally would have signed him to a 4 year contract and had him spend his first year in the D-league ala Pierre Jackson, but oh well. The Jazz will watch him carefully to see how he improves. If he take a big jump, or a more immediate need for a backup PG opens up, they'll still probably bring him over.

I'll be keeping an eye on him to see how he does. I have high hopes for the kid.

I hope his contract has reasonable (if not minimal) buyout clauses so he can come over whenever he's ready. My guess is that he waits at least 2 more seasons so he can sign for more money if he breaks out.

How many players that have been stashed for 3+ years have come to the league and made a difference?

If they are not good enough to come make a difference when drafted, it's not likely that they will get good enough to make it worth a buyout of the contract a few years later.

I can think of Pau Gasol for one. He didn't come over for a long time. Aarvidis Sabonis. Ilgauskas. Splitter. I think that there are plenty of examples of 'older' Europlayers coming over deeper into their prime.

But did they come over when drafted, or were the stashed?

seems alot of good euros came over at an older age.

How old were calderon, bellinelli, barbosa, dirk, and manu when they were rookies? (i have no idea but it seems like they were older than the usual draft pick)

Good point, but if you wait until they ARE good enough to come over to draft them then you might miss out on them.

Maybe euros are better off entering the nba in thier mid 20's rather than thier teens so its a good strategy to draft them (with a crappy draft pick anyway, taking away risk) before they are read and then let them develop before bringing them over.

A reporter was saying that the buyout is reasonable. I think it was tony jones.

They just want to space out the young guys contracts. Smart move. Let him develop on others dime.

That's smart if they were able to work out a reasonable buyout on a 3 yr deal. I wonder how they worked that, had to have been Neto's agent.
