Considering it's September, this just feels wrong. Next year, let's do it opening week.

I think the two teams are evenly matched. Got to give the edge to BYU, therefore because of the home field advantage.

Should be a close defensive battle, utes have to find a way to run the ball, our O-line needs to step it up - can't rely on Wynn too much. I'm worried we are a bit beat up after a very physical battle with the Trojans. I don't know that home field makes that much of a difference in these games they are always close games no matter the stadium. btw what's up with the late start, i hate that.

All BYU has to do is open up the offensive playbook.

The only way the Utes win this, is if Doman calls the game "not to lose."

The Utes don't have the QB or O-line that can beat BYU if BYU actually runs a "passing offense." Their receivers are much more explosive than anything BYU has seen thus far. Yet, BYU shouldn't have to cover those receivers for very long as long as the Dline can put pressure on Wynn. And Wynn's fly balls will give the coug DBs plenty of time to recover.

having said that, I think Utah is better at many spots than Texas or Ole Miss. Thinking that they're less athletic or less explosive would be a huge error. Their Dline could cause Heaps into making poor decisions. And running the ball "in the I-formation" with everyone and their dog knowing what's coming isn't going to work well against Utah.

Luckily, Utah's offensive line and QB might be the worst in the state. And BYU is at home. And, I've heard that BYU has been living righteouslier than Utah this year... So.... Magic happens.

Utah State on the other hand, might beat BYU no matter what Doman does offensively. I think they're better than both Utah and BYU this year.

The Denver/Oakland and New England/Miami games tonight reminded me how much the QB position matters in football, Kyle Orton isn't a very good NFL QB, yet the Broncos asked him to throw the ball 46 times and they end up losing the game to the raiders at home because they had no running game whatsoever and asked Orton to do way too much. Kind of felt the same way about Wynn after the USC game. Than in the Pats game you have Brady throwing about the same amount yet he is lighting up the defense like only he can. You can get away with that if you have a guy like Brady. We have to establish some sort of running game vs. BYU because our QB is more like Orton right now.

My heart's not in it yet, it's too early.
Go Cougs, I guess.
Utes stink, bla bla bla.

I really just hope it's a good game, and that both offenses pick up some steam.
That would make the season more endurable.

I have seen nothing from the U to give me confidence that they'll win, disappointed in the o-line, qb and even the d-line a little bit after the USC game. I haven't and don't usually watch the other team so I have no opinion of them one way or the other.
So with all that said of course I'm picking the U to win.

The way Utah played defense in the 2nd half against USC is giving me enough hope to pick the Utes. They actually got stronger as the game went on and I think they're going to be a pretty confident bunch heading into Provo. Don't get me wrong, I still see several scenarios in which Utah can lose this game (and they all center around Jordan Wynn) but I just think Utah comes out of the week having faced a USC team that is much better offensively than the Cougs are right now.

As opposed to past Holy War games, I think this game may actually be won/lost in the 1st qtr. Utah cannot play from behind with Wynn at the helm. Last week was "Exhibit A" as to why that won't work. If Utah wins this game, it's because they find their running game early and do a decent job of not letting Heaps and Co. get that offense on track. I think they can do just that.

Utah-21
BYU-17

While it would be nice to have the W, this is just another non-conference game vs. another non-conference, non-bcs opponent. I for one hope this matchup dies off as a yearly meeting. Every once in a while would be ok.

Wow, didn't take you long to turn into a BCS snob... :D

Honestly, how much does anyone care right now? BYU's going to the Armed Forces bowl if they go bowling at all, and Utah is playing in a different conference.

As a fan, I don't want to see the rivalry die. It isn't as important in the grand scheme of things anymore (for either team), but I think the rivalry transcends that.

To a degree, yes, you're right. But things that matter ultimately and eventually will trump things that don't. If these guys aren't playing rivalry week in the same conference, this falls into the "things that don't" category, unfortunately.

This makes sense. *sigh*

I think BYU was the better team last year and let one get away. I think BYU has improved since that game and Utah has stayed the same. I would pick BYU to win if forced, but who knows. Utah did win last year so who knows.
