What's new

Ok, you are coaching the Jazz. How do you stop Parker/Gino from abusing Jefferson on PnR?

We've seen this weakness out of Jefferson's game all year. A fast guard on the other team sets up in a PnR with Jefferson's man and simply comes off a screen and goes all the way to the rim shooting over the 6'10" Jefferson like he isn't even there.

It's basically a layup drill for the other team.

I have no doubt we'll see a heavy dose of that in the Spurs matchup. We're also probably going to see a ton of zone defense as that kills us as well.

So, budding coaches, how do you change the Jazz defense to stop the PnR?

Switching probably wont help. Just make it worse.
Playing a zone might help a bit, but, then we'll get torched from outside due to a very good 3pt shooting team in the Spurs.
Rotating over a 3rd player will help some, but, it'll open up corner 3s which will really hurt as the Spurs will exploit any weakness.

My best solution is to just go under on the screens. Just dare Parker and Manu to shoot 3s. Try to get out on the break on any misses and just out run them. In fact, out running them will be key to beating their zone as well.

But, if you have a better solution I'd be very interested.

going under screens will get us killed, but we'll probably have to do some of that just to see if they are cold shooting.

You're right, though, this is the big issue, and you know Pop is going to bust Jefferson's chops.

Don't have Jefferson guard the PnR guy.

that means he'll have to stick to somebody on the perimeter. Perhaps he can deal with Bonner, but the other guys will just take him off the dribble. There is no way around the liability that Jefferson is on defense.

I hope Ty tries a few things.... instead of just dogmatically sticking to one

1. Force Parker to start the P&R further away from the rim and try going under the screen; he's not as good a three-point shooter as Manu.
2. Put Favors on Duncan.
3. Let Parker try and beat us by not allowing him to get the three point assists as well as his drives.
4. Play the big line-up a lot, which covers up Al's deficiencies a lot more.

Play Favors. A lot.

I'd actually like to see Favors cover the strong side corner in zone a little bit. He can slack off to pack the paint yet he's athletic enough to get back to the arc and be a block threat.

Also to JF1971, Jefferson can guard the PnR but has this lazy *** syndrome where he doesn't get out with Duncan and then after the pick he neither commits to Parker or Duncan so Parker can either take the wide open shot or hit Duncan for a layup. I think he'll play with a little more intensity than that.

If you go under on the Ginobli picks the game is lost - he shoots 41% from three. The Jazz would have to be well over 50% from the field to keep the game even close, a tall task for even the best teams.

this is true, but there have been times were Favors hasn't looked so good in closing out.

Still, I like your outlook.

Bring a baseball bat to the game and kill one of them? Oh, that was how to stop Stockton and Malone! Deny Parker the ball for at least 14 of the 24 second clock. Then hope they don't have enough time to set up the pick and roll?

I'll be shocked if Jefferson has another gear on defense. We could sure use it though.

I'm thinking 5-6 possessions just to shake things up. CJ/Howard/Raja... everyone except maybe Hayward isn't going to be any worse.

I'm talking merely turning the motor on and making an appearance. The low post will flash up to balls cream on the arc and Jefferson stays halfway in the paint. He can do better and did in the Phoenix game.

During the last game against the Suns, it seems like Utah finally wised up and starting running at the pnr early enough that it forced Nash out of it or at least made them start it farther away from the rim. Until that game, it seemed as if Utah spent all season waiting to read and react on pnr's and they just don't have the personnel to do that. It certianly didn't hurt that Frye was missing in that game either.

It's going to be extremely tough to stop the pnr against the Spurs. IMO the best they can do is continue running at it instead of waiting for it to come to them, and make sure that their defensive rotations are timely. The other thing Utah can do is when they have the ball offensively, try to live in the paint and draw fouls. If you can get some of SA's big men in foul trouble and wear them out on the defensive end, they'll probably be a little more tenative on setting their screens for fear of picking up some offensive fouls.

All of that sounds good, but IMO SA is by far the smartest, best coached team in the league. This is exactly how opposing fans must have felt during the Stockton/Malone era. You know the pnr is coming, but you can't stop it. Karma is a bitch sometimes.

Favors on Duncan = Flop, Favors his bench with foul trouble three pays in.

Have Al switch to the other "big" (splitter, whatever) only when Duncan goes up for the PNR. Duncan is slow now. Al can handle him since he rarely fouls anyone.

I'll be so damn pissed if the Jazz team ever doubles Duncan.
