If using a nutcracker, place one nut in the circular space at the end of the device. Squeeze the handles firmly until the nut cracks. If using a hammer, lay one of the nuts on its side directly on the flat surface. Raise your hammer and firmly bring it down, aiming to hit the nut about one-third of the way down from its stem. That spot is the optimum point of contact, and hitting it should neatly split any walnut or hickory nut into several cleanly separated pieces. Once your nut is cracked, use a nutpick to remove the meat from the nut.
