Small Forward/Shooting Guard Position going into next year

Everyone is calling for us to draft a PG in the draft this year but a position of equally great need is SF/SG. CJ Miles is gonzo thankfully, Josh Howard will likely not be coming back, Raja bell is done, Demarre Carroll needs to be upgraded. That leaves us with Gordon Hayward who is a legit starter at the 2 or 3 and Alec Burks who has shown some flashes. Jeremy Evans is not a three other than some situations here and there. To me the #1 player the Jazz need to target in the draft is Perry Jones. He is a Player in the mold of Lamar Odom. 6 ft 11 with a great handle and nice perimeter touch. I think he gets bagged on because he does not have a superstar make up to dominate but would be a devastating 2nd or third option. Lamar received similar criticism before he was drafted in terms of lacking a motor or a killer instinct, coasting at times and not asserting himself and look at the versatile player he turned out to be. Lamar is simply not the BEST player on a championship team but he is an amazing third option on a great team. I think Jones also played out of position in college. He is not a PF although he is listed as one. He can post up some with effectiveness but he clearly is a perimeter player and needs to be played as such to excel in the NBA in my opinion. He needs to be drafted as a SF with him playing some four or five when we go small. Think of the length in the Jazz starting line up if we drafted him! Gordon Hayward at the SG at 6 ft 8, Jones at the SF at 6 ft 11, favors at the PF at 6 ft 10 and Kanter at the 5 at 6 ft 11! That is a HUGE lineup that should DOMINATE the boards. I think Jones will be a much better NBA player than a college player with the increased space. Most mock drafts have him available at the 8th or 9th pick. Alas I think he will rise up the boards and be a top 5 pick before it is all said and done.

If we have two picks, we can fill both needs (PG and a wing).

As for PJ3, we already have a big discussion going on about him in the draft thread...no need to make this thread. But since you did, my two cents is that he can play a bit of time at SF, but is primarily a PF.

Whatever player we get in this draft will not get playing time past Hayward and Burks, and by the next year when they will, we'll have enough caproom to sign a legit NBA SG / SF. So you're looking at this kind of short-sighted.

Not only that, but when you draft in the lottery, you draft the BPA. Period.

I sometimes wonder why bb fans get enamored with a big guy that has 'touch' out to the perimeter .. when said player hits a poor percentage. Sometimes, most times, the only difference in one 6'11 guy being able to hit 30% from 3 and another, is one guy chucks them and the other guy is down in the paint doing the dirty work. I like PJ3, his ceiling is undeniably high, but it's not because he chucks up a couple 3's per game and hits the occassional.

Chad fords insider article the other day said most scouts believe he was used wrong in college. He is either a two or more likely a three in the league, this according to gms and scouts. This made me giddy. The concern they have is his motor, but they think that he is basically Rudy gay and will be a great player the league. I like that comparison.
