For a while I thought I had Plantar Fasciitis but after my most recent episode it seems almost certain that I have Gout.

One thing I can say is that the pain I experienced recently is the worst most defeating pain I've ever experienced. I can imagine worse pain, but I've never experienced worse pain. It isn't a persistent pain, like a bad tooth ache or head ache. That type of pain is insanity inducing because it never gives you a break. The pain from gout, at least as I experienced it, is not persistent. If I'm just chilling then I can feel soreness and pain but it's just unpleasant. However, when I try to stand or walk on the affected ankle the intensity is so much that I feel like I might pass out. It causes sweats and makes my heart race and I just sort of want to crumple onto the ground and cry. I have to brace myself for standing up and mentally prepare myself to take each step.

The worst symptoms were several days ago. My ankle is still sore and I'm still walking with a limp but I'm no longer having a debate as to weather I should walk to the bathroom or just piss myself.

So that's fun.

You need to get that checked out. Don't guess.

While I have never had gout I have had the need to manage intense, debilitating inflammation. I was between 205 and 215 pounds at the time and used 3 Advil and 3 Aleve every 8 hours around the clock. That is 9 pills of each (18 pills total) per day. Drink no alcohol of any kind. Alcohol counteracts NSAIDs and you'll pay severely for even a single beer. If you've got pain beyond what you normally have to deal with, you can supplement with dexamethasone. You'll need a prescription for it *coughinhousepharmacyhasitifyoudon'thaveaprescriptioncough* Don't rely on dexamethasone. It is for rare emergency use only.

Get the underlying condition fixed as soon as you can. That heavy dose of NSAIDs will work but it will also change your body chemistry. Every time I got stressed I got thrush, a thing that normally only infants get.

Good luck.

Oh, I'm getting checked out. I just have to wait for this flair-up to pass and get into the doctor (already scheduled).

I drink regularly and although I haven't been brewing beer lately I've been an avid beer brewer active in the local home brew scene in SLC and pretty successful in home brew competitions. It seems like this is going to be the biggest casualty if I do have gout (I'm 90%+ sure I do). That will be pretty sad for me, honestly.

But the experience of not being able to walk without feeling like I might pass out from pain is enough to motivate some pretty drastic changes.

Colchicine (doc script) will knock out the gout within a day or so. If it’s recurring you have an excess uric acid problem, possibly caused by kidney inefficiency and that can damage your joints over time. I did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but I have had gout a few times—IHOP isn’t just a pancake house.

I totally get it. When I was on that course I still allowed myself one beer per week. It was every Tuesday night and I knew it was going to hurt but for that one beer with some incredible fish tacos at a bar with my friend it was a worth it.

If it turns out you have plantar fasciitis then I will talk to you when I see you as I have some pretty good tips for getting it under control.
Plantar fasciitis is a ****ing nightmare btw.

My back pain is the same. It makes me want to crumble onto the ground and cry in defeat. I basically fall out of bed in order to get out. It’s getting g a little better but it sucks so bad.

Feel better. If it’s plantar (which I’ve had), I too have some tips. Sorry @Gameface Pain blows.

It's possible I might have both. But my current symptoms seem pretty consistent with Gout. My previous pain has been in my foot and seemed to be at least somewhat consistent with PF. This most recent pain is in my ankle on one side and my big toe on the other side. Seems more like Gout than PF. But I'm gonna get checked out and figure **** out. I guess good with the bad, this is a bad enough experience to encourage me to make some positive lifestyle changes.

I have gout. I take Allopurniol every day. No issues since. Just make sure to gradually increase the dose as you take it, as taking a large dose from the start can strangely caude gout attacks. High uric acid levels can damage organs too, so acute treatment can be a mistake. Colchicine is awful. You take it until you get the *****. Prednisone pills or direct injections provides immediate relief. I've had it for 15 years and no issues once I got on the proper dose of Allipurinol.

I also avoid shellfish and organ meats, which are high in purines (your body converts purines to uric acid).

Yeah, I'll see what the results of testing and diagnosis are and see what options I have.

I really like shellfish, shrimp in particular, but oysters, scallops and the occasional crab and lobster. Over the last few weeks I've eaten a lot of shrimp. I've been buying the 2lb bags of raw peeled and deveined shrimp from Costco and using it for my lunches. Felt like I was doing a good thing eating more seafood.

This sucks.

Yeah, get a good diagnosis (what you don’t trust us with your health?). I will add that Colchicine worked great for me, knocked it out immediately and I’ve never been on regular meds, also haven’t had a bout in 10 yrs or so, knock that wood.
