I posted about it in the TV thread. It's solid but Ryder is unwatchable imo.
What's it about?
Just solid? We seem to have a similar taste, so that's a bit disheartening.
Things more strange than other strange things.
And who doesn't like a little strange? More strange? Even better.
I like it a lot. It's very early Spielberg-ish with the writers/directors admittedly watching (and imo taking from) many, many 80's flicks. The main song throughout (like a quick heartbeat rhythm) is very reminiscent of Escape from New York to me. The opening credits remind me visually of something, A Nightmare on Elm Street I think. Much of the plot is sort of The Goonies meets something, off the top of my head I'd say maybe Firestarter. In the two episodes I've watched, there have been two nice Woah moments, I'm not sure if I'd call them twists, but **** that definitely seemed to come out of nowhere. In general, I definitely like it but as stated, Ryder sucks. It's obvious why she hasn't gotten legit work in the last 20-25 years. Her overacting and neuroses are just so ****ing annoying.
I've watched the whole thing, and it seems to me you just don't like her as an actress. I think she was just fine in this. Is a mother missing a child supposed to be rational and sensible?
Watched the first couple of episodes, and I like it a lot. It is tense and atmospheric, and the early-80s supernatural thriller feel is well-done and not too on the nose.
That said, CL is spot on. Winona Ryder is terrible! Her performance is less of a panicked mother looking for her child and more of meth addict desperate for her next fix.
Ryder is perfect as a burnt out lost her marbles single mother.
I kept waiting for the bikes to take off flying. LOL
In addition to the movies already referenced, it had a Nightmare on Elm Street element to it as well.
