The Best Albums of 2010

I'm a huge fan of Arcade Fire, but I didn't love The Suburbs. Also, Infinite Arms by Band of Horses not being on the list seems wrong.. Just my opinion.

Infinite Arms was a big disappointment for me. It made me stop listening to Band of Horses. It sort of made their previous stuff less good. The Suburbs also disappointed me at first; I didn't get it for a long time. I'm not saying people who don't like it don't get it -- far be it... But it didn't click for me for a long time, then one day I had it on in the background and some of the lyrics started jumping out.... then it started to click. Now I love it.

I'd have to put Crystal Castles on the list for 2010. For me, their song 'Year of Silence' was my favorite song of the year. Just an awesome, gloomy thing.

About the year as a whole, I don't have a very fully-formed opinion. I'm still listening to things and thinking about things. I have no desire to listen to a lot of those albums though. Elton John? Taylor Swift? Thank you but I must decline. Not really my cup of tea.

This year was a crappy year for music yes?

Not that the previous one and a half decades were any better... sigh

Why must I live out my teenage years in an era of radio 'puke' and obscure 'meh'.

I'll admit I enjoyed the **** out of MBDTF -- but god dammit I think that was the only whole album I liked. The Elton John one was pretty decent though, need to give it another.

Beyond weird to see Leon Russell in the Top Three of that list.

"The Suburbs" was boring the first time, gets moreso with each listen.

And I know there's a reason no one respects yours.

Just sayin... *shrug

I agree with RS' top two; in which order, I'm not sure.

You and I are united on agreeing with the top two, but I'm pretty sure they ordered them correctly. The Black Keys album is their best since Rubber Factory but the Kanye album practically jumped out of another dimension.

What? Monster Magnet's Mastermind didn't make the cut! The hacks!

"Brothers" was listened to almost non-stop through the summer. I love the Black Keys, but felt that their albums were hit and miss. This was their first great album. I'd also put Mumford & Sons' "Sigh No More", Dead Weather's "Sea of Cowards", and Ryan Bingham's "Junky Star" somewhere on my list. The Arcade Fire album was good, but I wanted so much more than what it delivered. It contends, but loses to MGMT's "Congratulations" for the Most Disappointing Album of the Year award for me.

Meh, I still think Graduation is his best album.

Funny. I think that's his worst album.

I know my views on Kanye are somewhat heterodox however.

I'd rank them:

1. Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2. Late Registration
3. College Dropout (A near heresy I know)
4. 808s and Heartbreaks
5. Graduation

YB85: My only issue with the Black Keys album is that I think it's very top-heavy. The first five songs are outrageously good. After that I thought the album regressed to the mean of their previous work. I like their previous work, so that's not a knock, but I think that's what puts them definitely behind Kanye.

I've never been able to fully get behind the Dead Weather. In large part this is because I think it's a band that manages to be less than the sum of its parts and I wish Kate Moss would stop blocking The Kills from getting a fourth album together.

I think the Keys' album is more consistent that Kanye's, but they are similar in that both have a strong start, a soft middle and some good songs at the end that pick it up. On the Kanye album, "So Appalled" and "Devil in a New Dress" are pretty weak compared to other songs on the album. The first 5 tracks (6 if you count the Interlude as a true separate song) are great.

As for the Dead Weather, I don't disagree, but I thought this was a good album. The first one had some good songs, but was overall meh.

I thought the middle was the best part of his new album.

Simple, auto-tuned lyrics and poor attempts at singing just aren't my cup of tea I guess.

I'm curious how everyone listens to this stuff. Do you buy the actual CD? Download the album on I-tunes? I find myself listening to sports talk radio to and from work and am so lost on contemporary music unless I'm with the missus in her car. I don't know, there's only so much time in a day and as much as I love music, I never make time to listen to it since radio is sort of hit or miss and I have other interests (insert obvious joke here) after work.
